Fuel fumes pipe

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lardy, Mar 9, 2013.

  1. Have two new air filters for my twin carbs, just wondered where you guys have attached the fumes pipe?

  2. Do you mean the breather pipe ? If it helps, mine is fixed into the pancake filter though I am not sure how ! I can get a pic up if needed.

  3. About 90% of vans that I see the breather pipe is no longer connected... doesn't seem to cause any ill effects o_O

  4. Ok cool, cheers Paul! :)

I think the smilie means connect it up. ;)
Oil breather into one filter, tank breather in the other. Or both into one, it really doesn't matter, but do connect them up or you can get petrol and oily fumes through the heating system. This naturally makes ladies feel sick and this will be your fault.

  6. Mmmnnnn silly meee! Whoops! Have bought a small filter to go onto my oil pipe so will make up something to connect the fumes breather! Thanks Zed, I'll try not to be so stupid in future lol!

  7. Good point Steve.. I haven't got std heating, so I never noticed fumes :D

The little filter you got for the breather will gather oil until it's saturated, then drip it onto your engine and generally splatter it about.
Your engine is designed to have carbs sucking on it's crankcase - it helps keep the oil inside.

  9. Zed, you're not installing me with much confidence in using separate filter lol! Was trying to make it look less cluttered and perhaps create more room to work. Thanks mate, may have to bin this idea now :(

  10. If you've got one of the little filters - I had one for a while - it will make your heating stink and, as Zed says, gradually absorb oil from the case fumes.

Bit of proper plumbing necessary ;)

  11. Got any pics if you've done it mate?

Standard carbs? The idle circuit seems to like that bit of pipe to the filter arm to work correctly. Even if you could make it work, you'd need a teeny filter for that too.I'm trying to fill my engine bay with pipes and stuff.

  13. I should come over n slap your legs for using jubilee clips on oil lines!!

Belt and braces Paul, they didn't come off or leak without clips at but you know how it is...

Anyway it's my bus and I'll do what I like.:p

At least mine goes brrrmmm and takes me camping. ;)

  15. Now now guys?! What do you suggest then Paul? ;)

  16. are we talking breathers or oil lines now?? lol :D

  17. Sticking an oil collecting filter on the crankcase breather merely increases crankcase pressure whereas the system is designed to run under slight depression. Too much pressure and the crankshaft labyrinth seal for the pulley will start to leak.

  18. Looks like I'll stick with the monster of an air filter just now then! :(

When you consider the alternatives, the OG filter for what all does in addition to filtering air, is rather slick and discreet I'd have said?

Zed, I have a naf pancake filter, I have always vented the oil breather to the atmosphere with a pipe that then dangles through the tin, would it be better for the engine to get an original filter and connect it up?
