Faulty Bellows Thermostat?

  1. Also only test the thermostat in its bracket to avoid over expanding it.

  2. ^this. Forget poncy campers that do three and a quarter miles a year. The vans were sold to hard-nosed fleet managers by the million. An t1 engine in a hard-working delivery van would probably last 50k miles before being completely sh*gged. No thermostat - the engine lasts 40k miles, causing much distress and expense to VW's customers. VW had to fit one, and so should you.

Would anyone buy an old Escort, take the thermostat out and chuck it in the bin?

  3. ^and this. The bellows type will expand forever, before going pop.

If the bellows is fully contracted while it's in your hand, it's a good 'un. Duffers are full length, whatever the weather.

Can't agree with that, I had a T4 one with a hole, I might still have it, that was happily squished up. The spring on the flaps was enough to pull it open, but squished it was. I'll look tomorrow, it was in the shed last time I saw it.

  5. Point taken.

Bloomin annoying, looked perfect apart from the obvious bit where it worn through somehow. :(

  7. Like your post, Snotty , "tell it like it is, mate" i reckon that "do i fit or not " is one of the proper bun fight question s,along with "what oil......"> no big deal to anyone but me but! for the official record , mine? thermo fitted and yes its "Morris " every time.(thou change at 2000 miles)

  8. Any idea where I can get a bracket from? :)

  9. Mega bug will have them for a few quid but post a wanted type 1 thermostat bracket in the parts classifieds and bet someone on here will have one.

  10. Dammn, beat me too it.

  11. My engine is missing the bracket the thermostat the flaps the whole works:(

Im in the vw fitted it for a reason camp so will be trying to collect the bits to put it all back as vw intended

  12. I wonder where all these bits went after being chucked out? There must be millions of them hiding somewhere, prob the same place as lost socks...

  13. Ours had all tin intact, flaps etc but thermostat was sh£££££ed . Now with new working stat and new cable and everything cleaned and greased the engine warms up quick and heat in the

  15. :) thank you for your time, even if you where beaten, it's the thought that counts!! ;)

  16. If I buy the bracket and thermostat from same place then new type should fit bracket ok shouldn't it? My feelings are no other car has fail safe thermostat that is why you have temp gauge! How much of a mare are they to change with engine in situ? Also if on travels and it fails, could I just disengage so spring holds flaps open? :)

  17. I really stirred up a lot of questions and answers here didn't I!!! Must think of another topic equally as informative;)

I still don't understand why some suppliers are charging £120 for a bellows thermostat and some are even charging £12 'ish for the cable.

OK, I can see that a thermostat is a bit of a specialist thing but with lots and lots of people wanting to replace one surely there should be a steady demand for 'em and thus a decent price! I think I paid about £25 for a second hand one about 30 months ago and I even thought that was a bit steep for second-hand!

As for the cable, well, I bought 1m of stranded wire from B&Q, and applied solder to one end to form a blob which would not pull through the bellows nut - job done and it works a treat for the grand total of 98p + solder.

  18. At what temperature does solder start to soften?
