Faulty Bellows Thermostat?

  1. they are hens teeth too. Paul is the only supplier I am aware of unless you hunt for over a year and buy rusty used ones about two weeks before Paul announced plans to make GRP versions as I did. Oh and Paul's are a bit cheaper than I paid too.

    Oh well......

  2. i read on a.n.other site ,discussing same topic ,that ,(in one guys opinion/experience) a stat shouldn"t be dropped in hot water to test due whatever final exterior coating that"s on it, should be tested with heat gun? <if any use to anyone

  3. Many thanks Paul. I'll have a look at what exchangers are on there.

  4. Paul, Photos below of my heat exchanger. Will your cover fit this and if so maybe you could quote me a price delivered to Swindon. Many thanks

  5. Yeah, mine fit those heat exchangers...

I'm now selling them at £50 per pair inc post

  6. I read that somewhere too, if you dont have a heat gun you can put it in a clear poly bag first then put that in the water. Also read you shouldn't shock them by heating and cooling too quick.

  7. Can I ask how important are they cos just rebuilding my 1641cc twin webbered type 1 flat 4 and no sign of thermostat at all! Flaps bar and spring all in place so flaps permanently open! All metalwork present and correct!

  8. If they weren't important, vw wouldn't have fitted them ;)

  9. And if using a heat gun, use it on the lower setting as you're only looking for it to start to expand... go mad and you could melt the solder joints or damage the stat by over expanding it!! :)

They might be clever but they didn't win the war did they! ;)

Ok just one more thing to buy! Thanks for the advice!

  11. I guess their inclusion coud have been over-engineering though?? As for losing the war I'm not even going there except to say that only proves us and the Yanks were stronger in the end - but would you buy an American car!!!

Paul - funds a bit tight at the mo but I may well come to you in a few weeks for a purchase. Many thanks for the advice etc.

Steveagain - I didn't exactly drop the thermo in boiling water - just dipped into water that was off the boil - once I could see the bellows expanding I took 'em out again. They're still working a treat on the bus so no probs there. But, again thanks for the thought and advice.

  12. And combined we had more people;)

Only funning and will always bow down to superior knowledge thanks Paul :)

  13. I had missing under tins and a missing thermostat. I fitted them both at the same time, I have to top up the oil less since.
whether you need one or not is a matter for debate, Laurie Petit say VW only fitted them so that it helped demist the windscreen quicker, think about it, flaps closed more air flow down the heat exchangers. Bob Hoover reckons a thermostat is essential http://www.vw-resource.com/vanes_thermostat.html

  14. I can't think of a car that doesn't have a thermostat.

All engines run at an optimum temperature and you want it to get there as quick as possible a thermostat helps with doing this.

  15. It's all about getting the engine and oil to optimum temperature as quickly as possible... the longer the engine stays cold, the parts will possibly wear quicker, and fuel efficiency will be low...

  16. Great article thanks! :)

  17. but ok (bunfight starting?) looking at situation at present ,perhaps we won the battle but lost the war i.e. Germany, powerhouse of Europe ! there is more than one way to skin a cat>soz Phisiopro ,perhaps i worded that wrongly , was just something i saw on a.n.other site , and cheers P.Weeding , how i wish i had known just wot u posted ,when i tested mine , me? max hairdryer setting !(yes, towards thermostat)>doh! anyhow ,own a bay ,every day is a learning day !

  18. :)
I have no argument with the Germans! I think every good home should have one! ;)
Seriously though as has already been mentioned if it wasn't needed they wouldn't have put them in and I think with flaps permanently open no4 stays colder for longer so not only more wear generally but inconsistent heat across the crank case and pistons!

  19. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Why on earth would No. 4 stay cooler in particular?

No flaps in mine, it's going blow itself to pieces long before it wears out and I've even got a crappy aftermaket fan housing. Live once, live dangerously*. :)

*The exact opposite of any advice I'd have to offer if you asked me. :)

  20. Not sure why but was told by a VW mechanic that one of the pots stays colder for longer, can't remember which one, thought he said 4 but probably wrong! :)
