The UK is not alone in its thinking on masks. We follow the WHO advice. I trust their 'science' on the issue.
What is the purpose of this post?

  3. The surgical masks that you see most people wearing are (as said above) good at preventing the wearer spreading the virus to others. Not designed for long term use though - single use only. As for the general public taking them off and disposing of them correctly, well just look at the way they're using disposable gloves:eek:

Pointless (and wasteful) to wear the FFP3 masks when out and about for the majority of people. Although they offer the highest level of protection against you catching it, you need to be fit tested for the exact type and make of mask you're using, and put it on and take it off correctly. Also only to be worn for a max of 3 hours, and again, most are single use only.

The FFP3 masks are also in very short supply. At work, we've been told to only wear them for patients requiring airway management. For all other suspected and confirmed Covid19 patients, we're just to wear a surgical mask, gloves, and standard plastic apron (not the sleeved ones you see on TV).

The other problem with mask wearing, is it can give the wearer a false sense of security, resulting in them unwittingly dropping their guard when around others. Same problem with glove wearing, you see people wearing the same pair of disposable gloves for hours without changing them, and without decontaminating hands, whereas without gloves, most people would wash their hands much more frequently in the current climate.

  4. The thread was an attempt to drag us back into politics. Questioning the governments approach and tory donors. Now I really ought to wash the van today ... what car shampoo?

  14. We didn't follow WHO advice, although we're now inline with much of it, aside from testing, after significant delay. I would have thought the point of this post was fairly obvious but to clarify, it was to question the UK government's recommendation on wearing face masks in contrast to other countries (based on the same 'science') in light of other actions they have taken (based on the 'science') which are recognized to have been controversial. It's asking a lot of the British public to accept the government's rationale and judgement without question, scrutiny or concern, considering their track record. It will come as no surprise to hear that I'm no fan of this current crop of political leaders and functionaries. I make no apologies if this differs from others' views
