Exhaust fitment question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Starryboy, Apr 28, 2013.

  1. Doesn't say it'll fit a late. If you've just got a single carb, I'd stick with stock.

It'll make an appalling racket when you're cruising and likely rust to pieces in a year. It won't give you any more power and it'll likely be a b*stard to fit. Apart from that, it's fine ;)

I doubt it, it's a splitty exhaust. If it fitted a late bay it would say so, they wouldn't want to miss out on a sale...

  4. Cheers snotty. Tbh I was just looking to replace my std one. Its blowing and well rusted.
This one seemed reasonable. Is there one you recommend to replace the std one?

  5. Key point - towbar

You'll need to phone and check, as a lot of exhaust systems won't fit with a towbar on your van!!

But as zed and snotty have said - anything with an empi tag on will pretty much rot out/be overly loud

  6. Maybe the wrong link then zed. If I search vwh for late bay 79 the same ones listed

But as snotty pointed out its noisy so dont want that lol Need quiet for my old fart ears.

  7. I'm sure Zed'll advise - an Ernst, mebbe? It'll fit and be quieter than the other stuff.

  8. I can see Zed recommended a bluebird one in a previous thread!

You still got that one Zed?

  9. Fitted one of these to my GT beetle with no big issues, 1600 AD engine. Ran well but they are quite rorty and needed frequent touch ups with exhaust paint.
Believe there is clearance issues when fitting to a bay. If you check all the usual suppliers, some stock a similar design that will fit a bay. I have a large bore
thunderbird system on my bus which sounds sweet and looks much the same.

I don't think I did! No experience of them. I'm cynical about aftermarket exhausts, what's wrong with a standard one? I have a std beetle exhaust on mine (for the extra tailpipe breathing), but it wouldn't fit on a late bay.

  11. Yes sorry zed. Re read it and it was para.

  12. So whats the best source for a std one and I guess an exhaust and heat exchangers package might be available.?

  13. Should I buy one of the standard exhausts and heat exchanger deals from vwh or JK or should I source them as individual components?

Help before I waste good £££ on something I'm gonna regret :)

  14. What state are your current exchangers in? No point in replacing them if there's no need. If your exhaust is shot, I'd just change that.

They'll likely be repro ones anyway, which aren't that hot (literally).

  15. They give no heat at all snotty. So not sure what's going on. The fan kicks air down them fine. I've added new tubes and it doesn't make it out the end of the exchanger even cold. So I guess there is a blockage somewhere.

Is it possible to open them up for cleaning or too much agro?

Whilst I was doing exhaust I thought I'd save time and do them both. Kits are available relatively cheap but like you've said I guess the quality is questionable!

This is all new to me. I'm ok with the mechanical bits but have never worked with this stuff.

  16. No heat is a common problem - you need to get under the bus and check the system end to end. Likely that the operating cables have corroded or are disconnected completly. Have a search on here - plenty of threads to help you!

I'd just go for the exhaust. I don't think I could bring myself to buy repro exchangers, cheap or not.

  17. How much are you wanting to spend on an exhaust?
That one from bluebird customs is stainless steel and will probably outlast the bus
It also flows better than stock so can be kept if you upgrade the engine at a later date

Replacement stock exhausts normally last about two years before they rot out again

  18. Yes I understand.

I have wired the flaps open and can feel little or no air blowing out the other end so its not coming through the exchangers.

It's warmer now so not a major issue. I only thought about it cos I googled std exhausts and saw them as packages.

Where would you get a std exhaust from then dude? Mines rusty as hell, blows like mad and looks like it could cut someone at the tailpipe end lol

  19. I'd get, say, an Ernst from any of the usual suspects (JK, Heritage, Machine 7, Coolair). You may get a TLB discount.

While you've got the exhaust off, you could also unbolt the exchangers for a look see. Them being "blocked" sounds a bit odd: are you getting plenty of air through the hoses from the fan shroud? Assuming a T1 engine here.
