Am i right in thinking you just light mist the area and not try to "lay on thick" to totally cover the area you later want to paint?

ok ta, i'll check later, need to get some sort of paint on until i can get the paint guy i know to look at it, so the paint supply shop up the road said just etch prime and shove any aerosol on over the top for now to cover the bare metal.

  4. Just a light misting dude and allow to dry completely before going over the top of it

I use upol acid 8 etch in a rattle can

  5. Etch dries translucent, so don't try and lay it on thick cos it'll run like a bugger

You just need a covering coat, and that'll hold the rust at bay for a fair while 8)

Or, as an aside you can get 1k self etching hi build primer.

Should always use a mask aswell as etch gets right down your throat...

I presume it's ok to flat this etch off before i paint it? can you use wet and dry or is it porus like normal primer, should i just use it dry?

dont think you flat the etch buddy, its just a really thin mist coat so is uneccesary!

by the time you get some high build on it and flat that it'll be fine! smooth as a turd ;)

  13. The roughness is probably all the crap in ya garage that got on it while it was wet

Stick up a pic Rick

But as already said, you don't flat back etch, just prime over the top... although, that said, I've never had a rough coat of etch, normally dries silky smooth!!

some pics on my van thread paul area was clean and van warm paint on roof seems ok but just feels a bit gritty on the sides of the van

  15. I think it depends what etch you use, i use acid 8 mostly and it's smooth, but i've seen several cars at different workshops where the etch was rough, literally like 400grit.

I'll see what the can says in it later.

had another look at the primer, the rough feel is actually the overspray on the paint - which i can cut back with thinners, the paint shop guy says i can paint direct onto this primer? i'm not sure but here's a picture of it.

  19. That looks like a high build etch primer

If its quite thick and rough to the touch then flat it back with some 600 grit but dont go through to the bare metal otherwise you will have to start again

You can wet the paper to flat it but make sure the panels completely dried out before applying top coat

  20. In future use upol acid 8 etch primer in rattle cans dude
Its grey so you can see where your applying it but it doesent need flatting back
