That’s the diagnostic box. They’re redundant now. I chopped mine out.

I like to leave them in there.. just because one day I might come across an old diagnostic machine that I can plug one into and marvel at how rubbish it is.

  8. You need to take the release bearing off. The seal's hiding behind it.

  9. Took bearing of still no seal [IMG]

The guide tube needs to come off too (the three bolts holding it in you can see there). Seal is behind that.
I'd thoroughly recommend the Bentley manual which goes through every procedure you'll ever need to do in detail.

They rarely leak in my experience. The oil in the bell housing is more likely from the rear main. (Behind the flywheel)

All my oil woes have been the mainshaft oil seal , it`s a common problem ...

My gearbox input shaft seal failed after a lot of vibration from a loose flywheel. It was rock hard with age. There always was a small trickle of gearbox oil before that.

It wasnt difficult to change the seal but unless its leaking, leave it. At least you know where it is..

When I first got my bus I booked into a T2D Boot Camp , but by the time I rolled up a couple of months later, I had pulled the engine and replaced it five times for various reasons..

  15. If you haven't already got the Bentley manual, do a good search on the internet it is out there, free download. It's about 49 Mb then have a good read.:)

Bentley - was there ever a more difficult manual to use? No index. How stupid.
I can hardly believe I'm typing this but Haynes is more user friendly.
Both have documented mistakes which is worth knowing if something doesn't seem to make sense.

I have that, if I chop it out...where do the wires all go to?

When I had the loom out I traced them all back to work out where they were connected to. Most of them from memory are just crimped together at one of the main loom terminals (I guess the idea with the diagnostic box was that you could plug in and then see which components in the circuit weren’t working?) I cut them neatly as far back from the diagnostic box as I could, applied heat shrink to each wire then heat shrink round the whole bundle so you end up with a little “stump”.

Then you try to start the bus and it refuses....so you wonder if you've been a bit over zealous with the cutting!
