How far do you want to go ?
Do you have a timing light ?
Do you have points or an electronic distributor module ?

    List in order?

    As in:

    Loosen drain plug
    Catch oil in container
Discuss with TLB what oil, at length.
Discuss with man in pub that owned one, what oil, at length.
Consult Internet on what oil, at length.

    That sort of thing?

  4. Someone on here sent me a doc...

"Basic Servicing Notes for the Volkswagen 1600 Twinport Aircooled Engine"

I think it is ok to forward it. PM me your email if you would like it.

  10. Put a post up as you start I'm sure you'll find some bored people will be full of all sorts of advice.
    What engine
    Carbs
    Filters
    Etc.
    Have fun

  11. If you're going to clean it, a pressure wash is a good start. I take mine to the jet wash, drive up on ramps, spray some Gunk on and use the wheel wash lance. Remove any tin you can and avoid any electrics and the corrugated cardboard tubes.
No idea whether my jet wash is open at the moment though.

  12. So engine out and few bits taken of and began cleaning all oil and grime of everything . Must say ireally enjoying it 1st time out so was bit nervous [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Nice one! It may already be on your radar but you’d do well to chuck the chrome air filter and fit a stock oil bath air filter instead. It’ll warm up better from cold.

    Yes!
It’ll also allow you to lose that silly little filter on the crank case breather and pipe it to the filter (as it should be).

  17. While you’re motors out it’s worth taking the bulkhead off, checking your fuel tank & replacing any cracked fuel & breather hoses. Also check the fuel filler hose.

  18. Cheers mate that was the plan

The wire is a sensor connector for a 1970s diagnostic system, leave it alone.
It originally picked up pulses from pegs pinned in the flywheel.
    All usefulness long gone.

If you replace the silly air filter with stock and hot air feeds, this will make drives on cold days more pleasant in terms of driveability.
When that EMPI also style over function exhaust rots off, change it for almost anything else. you will get more power.
