From my experience I wouldn't recommend retrospective cavity wall insulation. We had it done 12 years ago and the first thing they did was seal up all the air bricks. We've got trickle vents in our window frames, but in the winter mould grows on the ceilings in the upstairs bay windows and the house feels like it is suffocating. They also made a mess of the drill holes to inject the insulation beads, breaching the mortar courses and breaking numerous bricks - the walls looked like someone had emptied an Uzi during a drive-by shooting.
Like most, I turned the thermostat down by 1.5 degrees this winter, so the highest the temperature should go to is 16.5C, with varying lower settings for whilst I'm at work Monday - Friday, and whilst I'm asleep. Looking at my bill for December, I'm not too upset: £138.21 combined (with about a 40%/60% split electric/gas cost) The year on year comparison makes it £17 more than December 2021. I've got a wood burner that gets lit when I'm cold, but working outdoors all day means I'm fairly used to wearing layers and don't really feel the cold that much (still in shorts). My luxury is a hot bath (but not every day ) Could be worse. (plus I’ve got a large English setter that is quite warm when he decides to lie on me whilst I’m watching telly in the evening)
Thanks, I must admit to being a cavity wall sceptic and every time they have come knocking on my door I have answered saying I am a surveyor tell me a bit about the issues like damp, cavity bridging etc and they usually turn tail and run. I will have to do a bit of research, ours is a mid 80s house, so need to check that if I do go ahead its not going to cause problems.
I had a long conversation with my brother about this. The insulation isn’t the problem, it’s more so that it exposes other underlying issues with the construction such as cracks, wall ties sloping inwards, drips from faulty roof, blocking air bricks… and the list of historical poor practices goes on and on. Insulating an old property is best done by wrapping a blanket around the outside and creating a good ventilation strategy…. But that ruins a nice chocolate box cottage or a row of terraces!
Diamond geezer He's still got a lock-up full of Betamax video recorders, if you're interested. Two for 50 quid.
Can't beat a dog or three to keep you warm! Hence the expression "three dog night" when it's really cold.
One of our butlers is only doing 4 1/2 days, now, And we may have to get rid of one of the car valets. May be forced to sell more land. We sold Yorkshire a few years ago, to pay for the pet food…
Coil your main supply wire into your house, anti clockwise, around your meter. The little wheel should slow down a bit.
Mine was a bit over £300 for December. That’s about £70 more than my direct debit and considering I had the manboy back from University with his hour long showers and cooking four meals a day, plus a week of the heating cranked right up cos it was brass monkeys, plus Christmas cooking and lights etc. I kinda thought that wasn’t too bad. But I’ve just had the thought that might not include the standing charges so it could actually be £70 worse than that. Plus I’m not sure if the online bill includes the VAT so maybe not so good after all.
