DRLA 36s and how to stop my bus backfiring?

At TE , I could see from the change in the patina on the throttle end stop screws that one side of Sarah's set up has been adjusted about 1mm on the idle end stop. The two carburettors were visibly quite different where the screws had ended up being set.

It's a pity nobody dared dive in and see what the heck is going on with these carbs. It might have taken a while to strip and inspect but it was a chance to get this done for her and she'd have learned a lot in the process. Has TE really become so standoffish?

It was getting to the end of the day on Saturday, I don't think anyone wanted to go down that route. I didn't ask.

Techenders never has been and never will be standoffish, as I’m sure you know. There was no-one there who knows these carbs, and I doubt anyone wanted to balls them up more than they already are.
Might have been a different story if it wasn’t late Saturday afternoon.

Didn't realise it was late Sat obviously, I wasn't there. To be fair it's ebbed and flowed a bit, as has the expertise of the attendees - I remember a year when nothing tech was done at all and as you know it's quite a while (6-7 years) since I was last there. :)

If I'd had my head slightly better screwed on, I'd have started this thread 3-4 weeks ago, got a few relevant parts, and taken them to Techenders. Instead I've been sticking the afore-mentioned wobbly head firmly on the sand and hoping the carb issues will go away.
    What Techenders did yield was
a/ me now being able to check my valve clearances (Yay, Go me!)
    and more importantly
b/ some other ideas and opinions, which has spurred me on to try and sort the situation.
@Baysearcher did go round the field and ask if anyone actually had the Dellorto carb book of wisdom; but as it's me that's got the carbs, perhaps I should be the one to actually acquire it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. lol
The book isn't really any help (I have it). It even details how to set the float heights incorrectly.
Plenty exploded diagrams on the internet.
Nobody with Dells at TE is bad luck.

I was hoping that as @vanorak made a surprise appearance at TE in May, he might make it two on the trot... I believe him to be the Dell Carb Whisperer. I think anyone there with a Type 1 had a single Solex, and anyone with twin carbs was Type 4. A profusion of Suburu too.

I've printed off a couple of decent exploded diagrams, so I should be okay for knowing what's what. Just need to practice my mixture screws, and place my preliminary order.
Exciting and terrifying all at once :D

I don't know about that but I do know if he sets himself to learn about ANYTHING he will not stop until he has a complete understanding. No half measures for Vanorak, the wide variety of subjects he knows in excruciating detail is a thing of wonder. :)

Yup and the advice from Vanorak, reiterated by Dickie on Sat afternoon who does run Dells but was a passing attendee without a bus, was that before any major changes were undertaken was to set the float heights.

I know nothing, run FI and have had zero carb experience since 2008 but I do know that if advice has come from Vanorak and validated by Dickie then it's probably good:thumbsup:

And if someone unwittingly follows the Dell book or pictures found on the internet from said book, the float height and fuel level will be much too low.
The book shows carb top lying on it's back, it must be held at 90 degs with the float hinge at the top because the valve is spring loaded.

I think Miss Scrooge is going to have to take the bull by the horns, take the carbs off, check the float height, check the pumps work correctly, change all the parts as detailed earlier, buy a snail air flow meter and have at it. :)
There's a first time for everything.

I don't think so, you're not daft, you know how to work through things logically.
Send them to me if you want, I'll give them a going over, change all the bits and set them up on my bus, which believe it or not will be almost correct for yours too. Idle balance will be right, mix will be very close and there's nothing else to adjust other than you ensuring the linkage starts to open both at the same time.
I'm pretty confident about this, when I took mine off my racy big valve 2020 type-1 and put them on my 2.4L not racey type-4 I didn't need to adjust anything. Even the mixtures were right.

That is a fantastically helpful and generous offer, and will result in a far better solution than giving someone hundreds of pounds to rev the engine a couple of times and store the van overnight :)

lol, I just want to read scrooge saying she loves her Dells and her bus is running smoothly. I'm afraid in the world we live in where ladies and cars are involved, most often a garage will take the *******, bull Marmite and empty ye old wallet while being condescending. Fact. I've always enjoyed redressing the balance a bit.

That's a really kind offer Steve, and I greatly appreciate it. I am tempted. But I also know you are in the midst of refitting your home, and have many better things to be getting on with than fiddling with my carbs (although perhaps it won't take you very long to fiddle? It would take me days I'm sure)
I was feeling okay about emulsions / mains / idles, and even about giving the vents a look to see if I could replace them in situ - but I know float heights really do mean carbs off, and I worry I won't be able to put it all back together. Then I'd have to go, cap in hand, back to Alex who has worked on them so far, and admit I'm fiddling with what he's done. Good mechanics are hard to find, and his attention to detail with the welding etc isn't something I want to lose.

I like to think I'm pretty savvy, but you are right... first impressions will almost always be 'woman doesn't know what we're on about so make it a good one'. I think I proverbially got my pants pulled down on the Morris Traveller engine / gearbox rebuild, because I didn't have the back-up of a forum like TLB or people who know me and know the car... it was humbling.

I can only take so much boat hacking at a time! Nice little evening job checking your carbs over and a few hours fitting/ running them on the van - pretty sure they will fit my manifolds but I'll look into that prior if this is something you'd like me to do. I wouldn't mess with my linkage or actually drive anywhere because I don't see why I'd need to if I warm my engine up a bit before I swap my carbs for yours, and your carbs linkage levers (the bit attached to the carbs) definitely won't be like mine so it wouldn't be helpful. I would need to bolt them on to my manifolds with your gaskets as mine have dell40 imprinted into them and dell36 might be different enough to cause an air leak so I'd need those too.
I'm up for it, I wouldn't have offered otherwise.

You're making excuses Sarah! You know the advice was given back in May x.
Deep breath, send them to Steve, Alex need never know;)
Remember, it's just nuts and bolts and a process
