CV joints

  1. Hi all, I've just removed my driveshafts today, messy job to say the least!
CV joints removed, everything cleaned and I'm now in a quandary!?
What to do, I've definetly got one out of the four joints that's stiff and I've checked the other three for scoring and they're all clear. I don't want to reassemble the drive shafts and find out one of the three or all are knackered so,,,,,
1/ how do I check they're alright or.....
2/ do I just replace all four at the same time and be done with it, especially as heritage do four for about £60!!!
    Thanks in advance.

Look for obvious damage on the bearing surfaces and balls, if none they're fine to use.

  3. £60 for four?? Few years ago they were £45 each, and that was all you could get

But you are looking for rotational play between the inner and outer sections of the CV joint... easier to do when the axle is still fitted to the van :)

  4. As Zed says - but why did you strip `em in the first place ??

    Good question.

  6. Knocking.

  7. With the experience I've had I thought it best to check all four. Turns out it was a good job I did as they had barely any grease on them.

  8. Thanks Paul, I've checked them all ways but you reckon aslong as they rotate freely it's not so much the left to right as you've got in your hand, if that makes sense??
The joints are £40 plus but heritage appear to have these, don't know why they're so cheap?? Probably best I replace the three German ones and buy a decent one for the higher price? How much grease should be in there? I don't want to overfill so it all come t or goes into the boot.

  9. Grease is normally a good quantity... 50-75cc's ish

I always fit the more expensive CV joints... you can get some real cheap ones now... I've seen them as little as £12 each, posted to your door

  10. Assuming you are getting new boots too , they supply a ickle sachet right amount , yeh dont over do it .

  11. yeh new bolts washers n spreader plates while your at it

  12. Yeah, the boots on the driveshafts are good and they've cleaned up well so I figured buy joints and a pot of the appropriate grease?

  13. A couple of the bolts were abit rounded as the torx key just spun so I'll be getting some others but just wanted to check consensus on joints really. Don't want to refit everything and then have to take it all apart again :(

  14. good ta see you back anyway up ta ya earz in grease :)

It's a spline not Torx, this may help you when putting them back.:)

  18. Been there done that so I feel your pain ;)
Thankfully I've taken my time and checked these ones over, fingers crossed these will last abit longer.
