Crunch from 2nd to 3rd and from 4th to 3rd. Also gets stuck in 4th!

  1. Right, im a bit confused as to which solution I should take for my gearbox problem.

Should I get the box rebuilt or replaced?

Is the 091 5 rib gearbox (2litre box i think, right?) better than a 1600 gearbox?

I have a 1600 stock motor attached to an 091 5 rib gearbox.
It has always crunched around 3rd gear when changing up or down depending on revs.
So sometimes I can get a smooth gear change but it crunches often with differing severity
I have recently replaced the gear stick and selector plate and this has helped to limit the crunching.
Another problem which has been getting worse is that its getting stuck in 4th. I used to be able to pop it out using the cluch by nearly stalling, this allowed me to pull it out of gear. This method is now not working and on the last 2 occasions ive just managed to stop and forcefully pull it out of gear.

So do I get my current box rebuilt or swap with an already reconditioned unit? Ive been offered a 1600 box but thought the 091 has a more economical final drive?

Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

  9. Put some oil in your box!

    Also adjust your clutch.

  11. As said change the oil first, that will probably sort your sticking in 4th gear but you'll probably still have the crunching in 3rd gear. I've had the same problem, they're a good box so better to get it overhauled. Mines in being done at the mo and its going to cost £350 just to give you an idea of price. Good luck!

  13. Sorry for the late reply, its a place local to me in south wales, so probably too far away from you but if you can't find anyone close to you I'll get the details for you.

How do you know your gearbox oil level is low?

It just seems a bit strange to me if you went to the trouble of checking the oil level, found it was low but then didn’t do anything about it.
