  1. did u ever get this sorted mate - only reason I ask is that mine is doing exactly the same thing.

  2.
  3. cheers mate - appreciate that.

Just got my bus driveable for the first time since buying it & gears all OK except 2nd to third (double de-clutching stops it crunching) and 4th to 3rd (still crunches if you double de-clutch).

  4. Mine was playing up going from 3rd to 2nd .I stuck van on ramps and sprayed WD40 on all linkage/ bushes .Put in first gear then shifted selector plate across to the left. Oh plus i fitted a quick shifter at the same time .Bingo i now have all my gears :)

  5. mine goes into gear fine, just crunches !

  6.
  7. will give it a go as it has had a new clutch in it before I bought it - just that it only crunches into 3rd, all the other gears are fine??

press pedal with your hand - should be approx 1" loose.

  9. yep, got about 1 inch

Not cable then, unless it bites right down near the floor which would point to a possible problem with the conduit.

  11. Sounds like 3rd syncro knackered?

Surely low oil would not just affect 1 gear?

Probably, but makes sense to check the cheap/simple things first. :)
A customer of mine related that a well known garage in London told him he needed a new gearbox. they subbed job out. the new gearbox was fitted and they let slip the "noise" was still there. It came back with a 4 figure bill and new cv joint too. ;)

  13. drained/changed gearbox oil - no better..

is there any other adjustment on the clutch other than the pedal height?

Nope. You going to have to take the engine out and inspect the clutch and operating mechanism. :(

  15. Bearing in mind it only crunches into 3rd from either 2nd or 4th, could it be the clutch as opposed to the gearbox?

It has just had a new clutch before I bought it, and the garage who fitted it were a bunch of muppets.

Also, sometimes, you can hear a bit of a 'thud' when you release the clutch in neutral after you've been out for a little drive in the bus.

    Cheers.

  16. If it only crunches in 3rd then its not going to be the clutch. Sounds to me as if the clutch change was done in the hope that that was the problem.....

  17. Clutch was done as it wouldn;t go into gear at all with the engine running - guy reckons that the clutch had 'turned to dust' - sounds a bit weird to me as I know the bus has been used within the last year??

We destroyed the clutch and the gearbox because of a worn shifter plate making the selector go a bit too far left and right. Originally lost access to first then second and burnt out clutch pulling away in third.

Total bill including gearbox clutch labour and sorting gear linkage and selector was about £800.

The clutch did not fail at the bottom of the hill in Lyme Regis but failed on the way to the chip shop after unloading the bus at the end of the holiday.

  19.
  20. Putting some oil in your gearbox is a lot cheaper...
