A bit of foam in the fan wouldn't make one side hotter than the other and I'm sure VW designed the fan housing internal vanes to ensure equal distribution of cooling air to each side and more for the cooler. Older single port non-doghouse fan housings had this issue apparently. The thing is you'd need to be driving it on it's limits for it to matter.
Ok, the piece of foam I'm almost 100% sure this is my issue. I had done 200miles before I had the issue with the foam, and did not gave any issues. After the foam incident, the carb heated up.. I will retest at the weekend, see if this has made a difference.
Depends how/where it was stuck. I mean the engine sits at operating temp through most usage and it's only at the limits of it's driving spec that it get's too hot. I'm still thinking the differential between sides is something other than the fan. I didn't mean you can safely drive around with the fan blocked unless you thrash it. :
OK, well, I will test it at the weekend, trying to get my hands on a laser temperature gauge. Thanks for your help.
OK. Got hold of a temperature gun. Is better, cooler than before, so the fan blockage to have an effect. and the temperature difference between the two side is much closer but the left is still a little hotter.
can stuff block the heat exchanger and cause this as ive noticed it whilst under mine today ? type 1 have checked fan its blowing ok , just a thought im gona strip n check more stuff tomorrow mines left too .
Have you got your deflector plate fitted under the barrels? Some forget to fit them then once the head is on its too late. Then they put them in the bin !!!
Its possible that the foam which was sucked up in the fan also has some blown down into the top of the barrels/heads, any debris here will prevent the air from doing its job
I dont know and I dont want to. I just drive it, service it and fix it if it breaks. Not into dash mounted worry gauges and im not even sure the oil-light is of any great use (alternator light - yes) There speaks a type 4 owner!
Technically you'd have to run 2 CHT gauges, and you'd have to do a comparison over several miles, with varying driving conditions
