So about to start the rebuild on the engine. I don't have a thermostat (have you seen the price of them) so is there any point/benefit in fitting the cooling flaps as part of the rebuild?
If you've got the flap mechanism, rod and spring, put it in and bodge the rod so they're always open. They do deflect air over the heads when they're open, better than if they're not there.
Definitely fit the flaps, the left one channels air through the oil cooler - without the flap air would mostly blow past it to the heads/cylinders.
Very yes is the answer ....get all of the gear , flaps, bar , stat , cable , stat bracket . and the little white plastic grommits that the bar clicks into place on the top of the shroud . the engine will run cold for to long with no stat . The engine will run hot if the flap that directs the cold air over the oil cooler is missing . Also the under tins are quite often missing on type 4 's are also important as the cold air is directed all the way around the system ...also when travelling the air that is blasting underneath is battling back the circulating air from the fan preventing a good circulative flow . When i bought my bus it was missing all of the said gear and it ran to hot . I put all the flaps bar stat cable the lot on and it has been perfect never overheats . If your engine is out do it as it's damned near impossible with engine in .
You can use a 1600 thermostat (if you can get a good working one) and it will fit with modification to the way the cable fits the stat itself. Looking at that we made an adaptor to fit type 2 to the type 4 cable nut and altered the tension on the cable accordingly. It worked fine and still does to this day.
Sure that's right? 250 ft lb is the correct number, I think. Or tighten it until something goes "tink" inside the case
No thinking inside Mr Snottski, the case will be poorly..the samba crew are twitching at the thought of 250 ft lb’s
