  1. Hey all, sorry with going silent. Had issues in the house that required my attention

  4. Looks like the cylinder head shims (which VW decided they didn't like anymore later on!) have given up...pick them out and ditch them.... hope you've got something over your short motor on the street if its still out there!.. to stop stuff going in the big holes or the whole lot walking off..

Something up here judging by the shadows. Valve seat receding into head I'd guess.

Does the one with the receding valve seat correspond with your lowest compression reading? It seems like it can't though I've never been quite sure which one that was. You said no.4, but the receding one is no.2 or 3.

  10. Looking at the engine it was top left which was the one with the lowest compression

No.3. That works. 99% sure that's your problem right there.

You don't say which photo is which. :)

  13. Haha sorry the one with the arrow is top left

So have bought a second hand camshaft sounds like I'm going to need other parts now

Sounds like a new head to me and you should probably refurb the other one a bit too. Probably exhaust valves, maybe guides too. You barrels look very shiny... new rings and a hone maybe, depends how worn. These things can go on and on or you can look the other way. The choice is yours.

If you turn it over , without the rocker arm assemblies and place a ruler over the valve stems, is that valve "taller" than the other three?
That is a check on what the photos looking into the heads seem to show, the valve receding into the head as the metal burns away because it developed a slight leak in the past, on a hot day being thrashed without mercy.

  16. Yeah, I saw that too @zedders, that valve looks further into the head than the others.

  17. Eeek this is starting to feel like its beyond me a

I don't know what that socket is doing on that case nut but DO NOT SPLIT THE CASE WITHOUT REMOVING THE PISTONS!!!

  19. Just resting on there, of course I'm going to take the pistons out first ( I am so glad I started to make food and read your comment 1st phew.)

You might reuse the barrels and pistons so keep them matched together and numbered.
