Comfy seats

  1. Last year I restored the front seats in my 79. I fitted new Westy plaid covers and original style hair seat pads. They look great but after 1 1/2 hours driving get really hard and uncomfortable. The springs are fine and I used the sisal covering with them. The seat covers have a very thin layer of foam in them.

Can anybody tell me what they are using to stuff these seats and make them bearable. I have a cushion but that makes me almost scrape the ceiling.

  2. I took mine out and went down the 944 turbo seat route for that reason dude... Those seats were giving me a proper sore lower back and numb butt cheeks!!

With the 944 seats I can virtually drive all day long now

problem i'm finding is they aren't long enough to support my legs that's why i ache when sitting on them.

  4. You are like part giant though ;)

  5. We used MGF seats and they've thankfully been spot on during 3 eight hour drives a couple of weeks ago

  7. Part giant, does that mean that some bits are bigger than normal and some not?

  8. Tiny plums by all accounts ;)

That's 5ins taller than me, and 4.5stone heavier...

  10. Eee :D

TBH I struggle with leg support in modern cars, as the majority of them seem to lack a tilting seat base... My base model seats in my mk2 golf have tilting base!! I can do 8+ hrs in that motor no bother, other than being a bit fatigued from driving all those hrs!!

  11. My Vivaro seat is just right, can do 14 hours with only fuel stops. The multi adjustable leather jobbies in the 4x4 have me in tears in just 4!
Ted's are Mercedes van I believe, they're ok for here to Spa (about 4 hours each side of the ferry) that's the furthest I've been.

  12. I did the same and replaced them with MGF seats, the seat base is five inches longer so supports the back of the knees and doesn't cause back ache

  13. IMG_20140610_224931.JPG I have original seats, re stuffed and covered in leatherette. They are the comfiest seats I sit in! I have broke my back in 2 places so I now how it feels to be uncomfortable. Maybe it's just me but I can't fault them. They have brittle brown hair like material in? Springs are good. A guy in Huddersfield did mine down by the stadium, he is a scooter bloke I think. £150 for the pair.

  14. Are they leather ones, or cloth? I installed cloth ones in our van, and they're ok but not the most comfortable seats I've sat in. Still, they were £50 the pair off ebay and are still much much better than the collapsed Mitsubishi seats they replaced.
What I didn't realise when installing them is it's advisable to have the driver's seat turned in slightly as the steering wheel and pedals are offset.

  15. Indeed, the standard driver's seat is angled inwards slightly.

  17. We had them reupholstered in the same vinyl as the R&R and door cards by @delilah. Can't say as I've noticed the offset, I installed mine straight too but I did mount it as far over as I could

  18. Thanks for that. I'm not aiming to change the seats having bought brand new covers. sea tweb.jpg
They used to be reasonably comfortable until the covering split and the springs started to poke through on the left hand edge. It used to have foam rubber stuffing but I thought I'd use the original "horsehair" stuff but which hasn't worked for me. You can see here the base is starting to sag a little. I'm not that heavy - just under 13 stone.

Do you know whether there's any padding between the top of the fibre and the cover on yours Buster? I'm considering adding a thin layer of foam.

  19. You could try using some "needled wool" opposed to foam

That is the very reason why I sold my mk3 cabrio when I got offered the mk2 GL and I have a friend with a mk2 who keeps his for that reason 2 too. They are ruddy comfy cars.
