Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Pdjordy, Jun 25, 2023.

  1. Hi am putting my late bay back together what are peoples thoughts on the blank on the dash pod? Mine looks a little tatty so contemplating a clock or rev counter? What have others done where have you bought them from?? Also still after a set of overiders if anyone has some lurking on a shelf in the garage

    Thanks

Hi. I recently put a rev counter in. I know peeps say drive by the noise, and I do, but it has helped and I'm happy I put it in. I know peeps who have put the original clock in and have said how load the tick toc is, especially at night!

    Type 4 motor isn't @Pdjordy ?
If so, do you have a cylinder head temp gauge. It's obviously not a clock or rev counter but ours sits in the spare hole in the pod

  5. Yep type 4 motor that's not a bad shout. Don't have a temp gauge. Anyone done this and where's best to buy from?

You'll note I was pretty racked off when I wrote that post but to be honest so long as you aren't expecting pin point accuracy from a gauge and just used it as a check for deviation from normal then they're great. I refer to it a lot and you do end up modifying your driving style to keep the motor cool.

@Zed has a pretty fancy aircraft one iirc..

It's cheapo crappo really, but it is a dual one so I get readings from both sides of the engine - one per carb if you like. I got it from a 2CV site but they stopped selling them. At the time it was cheaper than VDO or whatever most people use, seemed like a no brainer.

If you need to. I use mine just for reassurance, I can't make any part of this engine overheat no matter how hard I try, and I have tried. It climbs so far on a long hill then settles.

They are generally to be taken with a pinch of salt though because of the way they're (most of them) calibrated to a single outdoor temp, they actually read higher when the weather is cold and cooler in the hot weather which isn't awfully helpful! I never expected any meaningful actual temp readings.

I had a clock, it ticked very loudly and pee’d me off, so I sold it for a fair chunk and bought a rev counter.

my van is a 75 model year so it had grey gauges and the deluxe clock which were sought after. The rev counter came from Simone who started making them before they were available at JK or VWH and they made an prototype bay one for me without the centre bezel thingy.

the whole thing was cost neutral.

i do fancy a bit more knowledge when the van is up and running again so a temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and maybe a volt meter might be employed in a below dash pod

  13. Neither clock or rev counter serve any useful purpose really , I've fitted an oil pressure gauge in there which saved the engine at least once when the crappy silicone rocker cover gaskets expanded and blew . I noticed the pressure fluctuating and managed to pull up before the light of doom appeared to discover the sump was nearly empty , another minute would have finished the engine ....
    Fit something useful !

I think the VDO gauge is actually pretty accurate in terms of indicating temp fluctuation. I can't say I've noticed the daily fluctuation regarding air temp as the gauge starts at 100f or 37c. It's always been consistent so that's why I feel there is value there.
The well heeled Americans seem to rate the Dakota Digital gauge above all others

Rev counters could be for hire. I think new owners somewhat surprised with the racket an air cooled can make tend to shift far too early and even ten minutes with a rev counter to show they were changing up at 2,500 - 3,000rpm unnecessarily would be valuable. After that as you say... not much practical use. :)

They measure the difference between air temp and head temp in a nutshell, then add a set value air temp that they were calibrated at... or mine does. Mine definitely doesn't measure the air temp - yours might?

  19. Mine has a factory fitted clock which looks nice.

luckily it’s been five past twelve for the last 20 years so it’s always time for a beer and no annoying tick tock noise
