how do you propose I fit any other type of linkage to my right hand carb, look at the linkage arm that hits the throttle stop?

 

i found some left hand ones, but they were 10/32 UNF

Now I know i need Unified fine Pitch thank you, ill look for some soon

 

Screwdriver between plate and adjustable bit, twist and it should pop off.

I suspect they are fine pitch. Should be able to find half-height (or worse case, full height) RH thread 10-32s on the eBay.

Just to cheer you up, this has been welded to the spindle, it should have a nut on the end. Both my carbs have nuts each end so you can sway the levers around. I can't think why anyone would do that!

While I'm on a roll, this isn't right either, the stop looks like it's been glued on, it's not the rounded part/fine thread screw it should be.

 

Im saying its not simple to replace my linkage beacuse of the 'unique' Linkage arm.

If that could come off and be replaaced with something else then a csp bell crank may be possible. I saw my friends bell crank linkage the other day and it looked good, but couldnt work out how i could easily fit ine to my set up.

Ah, yes, because it's been welded to the spindle the arm on a bell crank would not work. At best it could only open the throttle about 1/3. Half throttle needs the bit that's been welded to be about vertical... as you can see from mine. Half throttle on yours is 9 o'clock.

That is how i bought them in 2004.

Brand new but 'modified' to work on a vw engine.

Not even sure who did the modification.

They are drla 40 B s. More recently i discovered they were originally from an inline engine.

They gave worked fine, until my recent self inflicted issues with them

 

You need one, it removes another one of the variables with that linkage, the multiple crazy angles make that linkage very difficult to balance side to side, so that each throttle opens evenly and more importantly closes on both sides at rest.

 

I wonder why nobody fits alpha flat 4 engines? - They look vaguely the right shape. 130HP from a 16v 1700 - I expect they are all toasted by now, a friend at college had an earlier 1500 and it was a high revving thing.

 

No, you've got Unified Fine already I think. @scrooge95 is right, they are 3/16" and the nut is 3/8"AF. Someone, me?, needs to put a thread gauge on and see if they're 32 threads per inch(UNF) or 24 tpi (UNC).

 

Or mark an inch of shaft, squint and count the thread peaks.

@docjohn if you have got a cb kit, put us out of our misery with your thread gauge.

Indeed, but like the subaru's there must have been a time when the cars were dirt cheap rust buckets with running engines. Maybe just too highly strung for a van and too wide for a beetle... or maybe they rotated in the wrong direction. It's a bit lucky the subarus turn the right way?
