Catastrophe!!! Petrol in oil?

The landmark has been staying at home at the mo and the past few days it’s really smelt of petrol when I’ve walked past.

Today as I was leaving I spotted pool of liquid with drips below van.

I had a quick look and it was what appeared to be oil and petrol mix :(

It seems to be coming from the bit photographed. The dip stick also super high :(

Is this a massive repair job?

    Any advice please?

Could be carb leaking petrol down your inlet manifold running down between bore and pistons, or if it is a mechanical fuel pump could be getting in there .

Certainly don't use it . One thing when this happens it certainly cleans your engine oil ways .

    Don't start the motor.

As Ewan mentioned, it could be one of a few issues.

You will need to drain the oil, put fresh in (along with an oil filter for good measure) once the problem has been found & resolved.

  4. Get the oil out and change it! Almost certainly a needle valve stuck open as Type 4 engine fuel pumps don't dump the fuel into the oil like Type ones do.

The petrol is thin so it runs past the rings.

I know you're on twin carbs but which ones have you got?

  7. I've had this on mine. First time was fuel leaking through the carbs when parked up. I fitted a electric cut off so fuel couldn't flow when the engine was off. That fixed it temporarily but .. more recently i've had fuel in the oil again, this time whilst driving. My FI fuel pump was giving too much pressure for the ict carbs so my needle valves were wearing out, so way too much fuel getting through into the engine. I've got a new low-pressure fuel pump now, replaced the needle valves and also had the carbs re-jetted as they were also giving way too much fuel - runs great now and uses less fuel too.

I'm going to do a write up on the carb re-jetting shortly as this may be of use to some others who have these carbs.

Thanks for all your responses. I’ve got something to be going on with. I will drain oil myself but may have to send it to garage to get proper repair.

It's knackered, probably best to send it to me for safety's sake.

Dont forget to take the plugs out and turn it over by hand first because one cylinder may also be full of petrol.

This can be fixed in a field at Techenders following the suggestions given here.

Although @davidoft did blow on the leaky needle valve and fixed it...

Actually it was cleaned out then he blew through it to check it opened and closed properly ..

Any idea of when it will stop dripping? Just back from work and it’s still dripping :(. 9.5 hours after I first spotted it.

Sadly I don’t have time to wait for repairs as I’m driver for nephews wedding in July in Dulwich! Apart from camping calls. Will it drip until petrol is all gone, or oil? Can I isolate anything to stop it? Please?

Put a hose clamp on the fuel line under the tank. If you don't have a clamp, you can use a small pair of mole grips.. don't squeeze it too tight, just enough to stop the flow.

Thanks will look for a clamp, I guess I could empty it into a petrol can?

  18. you would probably need loads of petrol cans, as they only hold about 5L

Is the needle in the carb? If I take the air filter off can I release it myself?

I’m not a mechanic btw :) I think my capris had either VV carbs or Webber’s.
