Was red when I bought it and very 70’s looking before it got the typical 90’s cal look treatment!

  2. Can't be Marc Bolan's, as it doesn't have a tree in the bonnet...

"OMG!" .... I've just realised where this VW thing started!!
My parents neighbour from 1960 to the late 1990's had, all that time, a pale blue 1200 bug from new ..... so I walked past THAT most school days for a good ten years, and it was a fixture out front the rest of the time .... I asked him to let me know when he was selling it so I could buy it as my first car ... Dopey bugger pegged it and someone else (he had no family) must have snaffled it :(

For me it was a schoolmate and neighbour’s dad’s late bay. Had a few trips out in it and it was used by my mate and his sister as their L-plate learner and runabout.
As an 18 year old I saw great potential in the bus - much more room in it than my Triumph 2000 even though that had ‘shagmaster lay-flats’ as I liked to call them.

They were wipe-clean vinyl at least.

Not my walk to school, but on the 55min bus journey each way, I used to see one of these everyday for weeks until I realised what it was.

It was a time we were all on the lookout for Mini Metros that had just been launched as the great white (other Matt finishes were available) hope for the British car industry.

Funny how well sorted poverty spec cars look in hindsight.

He couldn't drive, in the crash that killed him the mini driver survived....so doubtful either car was his.

The dates are tight too, Ranchos first appeared in 77, Bolan was killed late 77. Really advanced car for its age, Discoverys owe a lot to them.

Yeah, we live in Pembrokeshire and every time we go ‘back home’ I notice there is all sorts nailed to that tree! My dad had a HiFi/TV shop in East Sheen and Marc would call in and I can clearly remember him buying fuses for his guitar amps!

I used to have hair like Marc Bolan ... Now we're more in the "Bazza" territory. Look >>>:hattip:
