I didn't realise carbon monoxide only killed at night. Pie l would have thought that really is reason enough to have a detector. It's an odourless gas.

The mother and daughter it is reported we're taking a nap but who is to say they were not overcome and felt sleepy. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not fun if you should survive. I just think its foolish not to have one when there are gas burning appliances in a bus.

  2. We have one in the kitchen next to the aga, I will get one for the bus too. Thank you Birdy, you're like the public service broadcaster of TLB xx

  3. it's not just gas. i had carbon monoxide poisoning years ago.
it begins with flu like symptoms and getting very sleepy (no change for me). the sleep is a very deep sleep. I went to the docs but was told it was probably a bug then the bruise like sots started to appear and i was sent straight to hospital. Thankfully (?) mine was from an open fire and with my old windows the house was very ventilated but whenever i had a fire i would fall asleep in front of it.
i have co alarm in the house but not one for the van or awning - this will be rectified :)

  4. Do they do specific ones designed for campervans/motorhomes?

If so maybe a group buy is in order

  5. So true, plenty of seals disintegrate through time. Vaillant and Glow-Worm had case seals that failed after 12months.. It cost them thousands on the recall..

*** Anything that burns can create CO... Not only gas... But all fuels, even disposable BBQ's

  6. Id be interested to see if the alarm in an awning goes off when running a propex or erber in the bus
They vent outside but if the breeze was in the right direction it could push the fumes into the awning

  7. Disposible bbqs in tents have killed a fair few people in the last few years

I've not seen one for campervan living.

With regards to the awning this may be of interest to you paradox. While in the workshop my rear hatch was open and Mikes bus (back to back) was around 8-10 foot away and with the engine running. It didn't take long before my alarm went off. I'd say around 5 mins or a bit more. And it's gone off before in the large high roofed workshop.

That is just totally stupid!!!! I couldn't believe when I heard that people did that.

  10. Id imagine it would from a bus engines exhaust with no cat

My heater isnt a propex but still vent externally on the bus
The thing is its mounted and vents on the awning side
Im going to make a curtain to go between the sill and floor to stop a draught being blown in the awning which may help keep the fumes out
Last thing i want is whoevers sleeping in the awning to get poisend by those sleeping in the bus with the heater running

  11. Its also one of the most used ways to comit suicide in a car since the fitment of catalytic converters

  16. ooh, good point. will make sure when my propex is fitted that it's vented on the other side and use the awning skirt, although at bed time we usually close the awning up.

  17. No
Not anal it may save your life or someone elses one day

I must admit that in my younger days i used to have a hurricane parrafin lamp running in my tent all night to keep the chill off
Im still here but i wouldent be tempted to do it now i know what i do as a grown up

Infact i think it was a tip told to us in scouts but back then a tent was a piece of canvas and some wooden poles
Modern tents are a lot more sealed

  18. I did once have one of those small card type ones that Halfrods sold that changes colour if it goes above a certain level. Not got one in this bus but then again, I don't have a heater on just got a artic sleeping bag and balaclava for me noddle................oh and I am a bit porky too

  19. **When using gas hobs**

You all know that bright blue flames are GOOD and floppy orange flames are BAD..

All fuels when burnt properly produce little or no Carbon Dioxide, but if the flame is cooled too fast, or is impinged by something cold it will turn Orange (BAD) and produce CO...
So, look at you gas hob flame, nice and Blue (Good)... But watch when you put a sauce-pan on top of it... Yes, it'll go Orange (bad) for a while...

This is why many CO alarms will go off, so always use you hob in well ventilated areas, and never use to heat a room or van !!!

Cheers Baggy. This has always confused me as when I cook in the bus it never goes off. Unlike my smoke alarm at home
