Well cracked on a bit today,

Had a tidy up first because I hate clutter when I'm working.

    Then stuck this in it

I'm quite chuffed with myself as I got the engine out on my tod and it only took about four hours.

Thank you to @Mr B for the kind loan of the motorbike lift, it made the job much easier.

Strip down day tomorrow after work.

Ah - I meant to say if you're taking the exhaust/heat exchangers off, along with the undertins you should do it before you take the engine out. Sorry.

Well today has been a learning experience to say the least. Maybe I should buy a book about VW engines.

Any way I finally got the head off No 1 & 2 only to find . . .

Which to my uneducated eyes looks OK, and . . .

Apart from a bit of oil which I think dribbled out of the pushrods tubes this looks OK as well.

The engine will still only turn until No 1 is at tdc but not past in either direction. Looks like 3 & 4 will be coming off tomorrow.

  14. Not too clever looking at those pics on my phone but the head looks like its been leaking quite badly, could be fubar, and the barrels look in a bit of a mess, that one looks like its full of crusted carbon flakes? Or is it just the pics?
    :)

  15. Ah, is it a reflection?
    :)

I see what you mean about the oil leak but wouldn't the new gaskets I put in solve that?

Well 3 & 4 came off this morning and the inlet valve seat appears to be embedded in the head and the crown of the piston. I guess that would account for the banging then!

I'd love some advice from the engine guru's please.

The fragments are hammered into the head if I dig them out and dress the damage on the head and piston would that be ok?

Is there going to be any damage on the main bearings and con rod because of the shocks or can I rebuild from here?

Is it best to put new valves and seats in all four cylinders bearing in mind they're all the same age?

Do I need to put new piston rings in or is it ok to use the old ones?

    Thank in advance guys.

  18. New head and new piston needed
Id also split the block and have it chemically cleaned and inspected
If any of those fragments have got into the oilways it could scrap your engine in a very short time
You will probably find the barrel is scored aswell bob

Damn! How much is that gonna cost?

  20. Are your piston rings intact and free to move on the piston?
