Thanks mate, I've been looking up engine codes and according to an Australian site it looks like mine is actually an 1800. The heat exchangers have tubes that insert into the heads, rather than a flat flange which I think rules out a later 2ltr.
You can never be sure what you have with these old vans, can you have a measure up and then you'll know for sure what you're looking at?
Ok so your going to need a new barrel and piston Its best to change them as a set of four The head maybe able to have the damage dressed and new seats fitted depending on how much damage there is where the valve seat fits It may work out cheaper to get a new head So your going to end up with a top end rebuild Even if no fragments of metal entered the oil ways you would want to rebuild the bottom end as a freshly built top end can quickly finish of a worn and tired bottom end Id say your looking at a full strip down and rebuild as the best approach dude You could dress up the damage a bit on the piston and fit a second hand head and put it all back together But how long it would last before somthing else gives way isnt somthing id like in the back of my mind whilst driving on my holidays
While you have it out its worth also checking the clutch and flywheel.. From time ans cost perspective I reckon buying the ^^ above would be just as cost effective.
I personally don't see how they can do all the work that they say they have done, plus the new parts for that price New valves and guides are £200 Gasket set £60 Crank grind £90 Main bearings £60 Rod bearings £35 Barrels and pistons £325 I'm usually looking at a minimum of £1200 in parts for a rebuild, then there is potential machining work too... @sANDYbAY with the damage to your head, the bottom end will need to come to bits as the rod bearing will have been hammered into the crank journal!! So either you go down the self build, or you take a punt on the £1250 rebuilt unit on ebay!!
Why don't you phone them and ask the valid questions Paul has put? If they are as good as the ad then I would be tempted go that route too!
I wouldn't touch that with yours. I need some kindling for my wood burner, you may as well put your money on that. Paul's is right, you can't get the bits for that. If you want to know more first check out VZI. This is the 6th eBay username I've seen for the same crowd in the past 3 years
That all makes perfect sense and I've done some research on the builders for that engine and it doesn't make good reading. I've also priced up some of the components and came to approx £1200 as well. Me and Jan have talked about the different options and have decided that if we buy cheap we'll end up buying twice. Is there some way of discovering exactly what size and type of engine I have so that when I order parts I can get the right ones? @Paul Weeding could you give me some idea of how much I should be paying to take my bare engine to a good engine builder to sort out?
