Thanks for the advice @Baysearcher I'm well impressed with the VW Auto Museum's service. Sent the email on the 29th October and received a reply asking for proof of ownership on the 4th November so I sent them a copy of page 2 of the V5 n they sent me a copy of the declaration on the 7th with the original arriving today, the 11th. Great service and scrub my earlier comment on buying the Birth Certificate, this is clearly from the vehicles manufacturer and should be fine for the DVLA next year. €60+ saved plus the tax moving forward. I applied for my certificate at the end of august from VW and still haven't had the cert or any communication from them - anyone else had to wait as long as this?
Just celebrated with a pint. Still waiting for paperwork,but checked on line, and beetle is showing tax not due until April 1st 2018. I've had this car since the early 90s and just missed the last round of free tax.
Just for people's info, I got my van birth certificate in plenty of time ready for this April as the birth certificate says a build date of December 1976, the V5 said 2003 (presumably when it was imported from Germany) Due to some hassle at the post office I had to ring the dvla to check what I needed to post, to which a very helpfull chap said let me check the data we have on file, he then informed me my van was eligible for historic tax even though my V5 says first registered 2003! So in the end I didn't need the birth certificate to prove date of birth, simply filled the V5 in as historic and went back to the post office with the mot and told them to start the procedure as the guy at dvla suggested and all done! Moral of this story, ring the dvla first and see what info they have on file. Hope this helps someone

I tried to sort out historic status for mine today. It didn't go well. The first post office didn't have a clue, phoned DVLA and they said the van wasn't entitled to it, on further discussion it turned out it was. The post office then had to phone their help line to find out what they were meant to do. In the end I gave up and tried another post office. This one wasn't much more help but eventually after phoning the DVLA back again the lady there confirmed that the DVLA system didn't have a year of manufacture date for my van so it wasn't providing the correct options on the post office system. I was told I need to get proof of manufactured date and send it together with a completed V10 and the log book, the DVLA would then sort it out. Fingers crossed.
I bought the expensive VW Birth Certificate for the bus last year, which took about 6 months to arrive. DVLA did not request it, so I think I will just frame it, and hang it on the wall of the garage where the bus lives. Tony
It was all very simple in the end. I went to my local post office armed with every bit of paper work and my birth certificate to see what to do and which forms to fill in. I also took coloured photo copies of everything so I didn't risk losing anything, and a page from classic car weekly explaining how to do it.The woman behind the counter didn't know what I was talking about but said she would tick the change of vehicle class on the v5 and send this off on its own as they had been told by Dvla not to put anything in with v5's. So one signature on the v5 and a couple of weeks later my car is reclassified and automatically taxed for a year. Result.
Right, just received the birth certificate for my van from VW, first date of registration 01.01.77 (based on the info when I imported it), date of manufacture 01.03.77. How the hell do i explain that to DVLA....
Don't bother, just tell them the one that suits your needs best and wait and see if they ask for more info
I thought they went on registration, my van was manufactured in may but was actually registered in the January before so not sure how it will work out when i apply either
