My wife says she has a few forms for me to look at tonight. She suggested by short text that I have to wait till April. Soon find out.

  2. It depends on what date in January. If it's between the 1st and 7th, like mine, you should be able change to historic on 1st April this year. If it's after the 7th, then it will be 1st April 2017.

    Ah I see.
How is that classed as a 40 year rolling exemption then?
My certificate just says "January 1976" so I guess I'll have to wait until next year.

  4. It becomes historic on the 1st April in the year following its 40th birthday. But if the V5 shows first registration between the 1st and 7th of January, it is assumed to have been built the previous year. Have a look at this, the bit in brackets,

It currently says 1975, but on 1st April this year, that should change to 1976. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no one forgets to do it. I was watching it last year and it did update.

So even if it was built in March '76 it would still become tax free in April this year?

  6. No, next year.

Ah, so it's more a 41 year rolling exemption then!

  8. Not necessarily. It could have a build date of 31st December 1975, and get historic status on 1st April 2016.

    Yep.
I'm not really sure why they had to make it so complicated. If it's a 40 year tax exemption, make it the start of the first month following its 40th birthday. Now it's all electronic there really is no reason why they couldn't do that.

  10. I don't disagree. Unfortunately, the powers that be, do. :(

  11. Glad you've got your head around it.
From the sticker on the door pillar mine was built incomplete 12/78 and manufactured in 1/79! The m-late states than it was made in the last week of Dec 78.
Therefore it will become historic April 2119. I think.
    Oh my head hurts.

^^^ Thanks, this is how it works. I know my car was built in January but don't know what week. I have a 25% chance of getting free tax this year. I'll send off for a data sheet.

  14. Just look up your m plate online.

Saves paying and waiting to be told yes or no

    Can't find it. It's a 1303 karmann.

  16. There's a e mail you can e mail to vw uk, they might be able to give you a build date and other info, that's all you will need with Dvla. Have a search on here I've put it up a few times.

Sent off for a certificate a couple of weeks ago. €50 just gone out the bank so we'll see how long it takes. Btw beetles don't have M plates.

I really must pull my finger out and get cracking on this. My bus is probably tax free right now.

It was imported into the UK from Australia in 1994 and that's what the muppet who imported it declared as 'date of first registration' as well as 'date of first registration in the UK'.

I've just inspected my V5C more closely and it says in section 10 'New Keeper's Details'
    "Date of first registration - 15 06 94 (DECL/D MANUF 1975

@Fat_Brum did you send that email out of the blue or was there a form to fill in or something?

  20. Just send with relevant sentence @sANDYbAY, I used it last year with helping with registration etc. Found it hidden in the vw site.
