Beetle Resto

  1. Tax has run out on both cars and the bus so all have now been declared sorn, no job, no transport.

To be honest, without any heating pipes the bus was getting a little cold.

  2. sorry to hear that dude, things will look up soon. stay positive

  3. Keeping myself busy helping my little bro do a complete resto on his '68 beetle.

I must say its great fun

  4. have to think you deserve half-use of your brother's beetle then ;)

  5. Well after I cut out and welded in both rear wheel arches, nelsons hat, nelsons nose, heater channels, repairs to both footwells, new rear valance, weld up rust holes, bring back the whole bug to bare metal and prime complete interior, underside, and arches (he wants a bare metal finish on the body) POR15 all the underside and wheel arches. Now need to top coat the interior whilst he is doing the mechanics (something he did at college) I have invested a lot of time into it but will be happy to see him enjoying it.

Anyway I have lots of prep and sanding left to do on my bus.
What goes around comes around. ;)

    Nice, proper jigsaw puzzle... ;D

  9. Yeah, that got silly. Cut back to what I thought was good metal, start welding and the original metal just evaporated. Cut back more, weld, same. Time and time again. Finally got back to some good strong metal.

  10. sorry, assumed it was the prevous owner... :-[

when I do work like that, I always say it was the guy who had the bus before...

  11. I'm not ashamed of it. It will be hidden by carpet anyway. Lol

  12. update on the beetle, all interior has now been topcoated along with the doors, bonnet and boot. Currently rewiring the beast:

excellent work on the beetle mate, looks superb, well done!

  15. Chuffin esta it's the Chrisradioman resto thread ;)

Good work chaps keep it up.

  16. Cheers dudes, clearly the first lot are the final images. Photobucket has uploaded them back to front as i did a batch import.

  17. Looks good mate, Whats the plan for the outside? I know you said keeping it bare but sealed clean or rusty look?

  18. My brother is rubbing it down now. The look he is after is a slightly brushed, swirly effect bare metal. No rust, then lacquered.

  19. Dont rustoleum do a Clear version of their gear? maybe good for extra protection?

  20. We have been using POR15, base coat, primer, top coat and lacquer. This stuff is better than rustoleum, it creates a seal on the metal that stops rust, prevents rust from forming and seals from any moisture getting near the metal. His bug will last another 40 years.

It's not cheap though. He has spent almost £200 on it.
