Beetle as a daily driver?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by nickyd, May 30, 2012.

  1. Hi all,

As well as my bus (of course) I have a company car. However, the company are putting up the cost of having one, plus I have always fancied a beetle....

So the question is, do any of you have a beetle as a daily drive? If so are there any issues other than maintenance required. Also, I know nothing about beetles so should there be certain models or things to look out for if I was going to buy one? Or is it mostly common sense?!

It wont be until late summer if I do it. How much cash do you think I would need to pay for one that is going to be reliable enough. I can do spannering and don't mind the odd bit of MOT welding. Not after a show car, just an a to b job. Commute is 15 miles each way.

    Cheers guys

    Nick

lowie runs one, i run a new beetle - don't get one of them. The only problem i see is the potential to have two cars with no heat and dubious reliability.....

If you're going to opt out of your company car scheme, presumably you'll get a car allowance instead?
Most companies have various stipulations on what they will provide an allowance against.
These often include "Maximum vehicle age of 10 years".
    May be a problem.

  4. Nope, I wont get a car allowance, but my basic will go up to compensate, so therefore I can buy what I like ;)

I don't drive for work, I'm based in he workshop, the company car is just a perc and nothing else if that makes sense...

Good point about two cold unreliable motors, haha!

  5. Here is my daily drive, Gertie. I have had her 7 months now and I'm loving it .
Day to day journeys are no longer a chore.
One big advantage I have found is that it hasn't depreciated in value. It is worth what I paid for it. It is a '68 so no road tax to pay, £200 to insure.
So far its working for me.

  6. Company cars became a non-perk years ago with the tax regime we have. You now have a car allowance so you can indulge in some interesting, low depreciation motoring. Enjoy!

That's not strictly true. Of you pick your car wisely you can get a great car for very little outlay.

  8. Id love a tax free bug as a daily drive

They aint all that bad on fuel compared to my modern car and id save £220 a year on tax over my modern car

The best bit is if it started playing up i can fix every part of it at home unlike my passat which needs £60 spending just to be plugged in to read the fault codes

The slight missfire when cold is doing my head in but if i send it for diagnostics and repair it will cost me more than the cars worth

  9. it works well and its nice when there both running well ad free road tax does ease it a lot but it is blinking cold in the winter lol

Use my bug all of last year as a daily. It's good fun in the summer but is a bit rubbish in winter so that's pretty much what I do se it from may until sept. see my bug link below :) you will pay between 3-5 k for a good runner

Ps anything under 39 mins commute would be ok.

  12. I used my beetle daily for 2 years until it was restored last year. Mint in summer, ladies loved it. Cold in winter but fun. It did have (until putting my original 1500 back in) a verge 1600 twin port init so sideways into work everyday :). Hoping to use it again for summer next year if I can be bothered to put it back together. Do it! Cheap insurance, fuel ok ish, no tax. Happy days :)

  14. Cold no problem. just get a bikers electric waistcoat. Weirdly keeps your hands warm because your blood circulation stays up.

  15. Do it and if you get one that you can sort the heating out so it works than you won't be cold either ;)

They are great fun, used mine as a daily when I had it. :D

had my beetle as a daily for a couple of years, 2-300 miles a week and the odd 300miles journey and it never missed a beat :)

  17. Nick rather than shell out for another car why don't u use your bus?
I use my bus as my daily, 24 mile round trip. My journey to and from work is the best bit of the day..... Even in the winter ;)
