  3. This^^ just reminded me
@Lardy another option which may save you a little! is to buy a cheap t25 DK code box off the net. The ring and pinion is the same as a 6 rib box. If you give that box and yours to a gearbox builder he can swop it over.

Have you asked the guy I used for a quote he is cheaper than Bears and cogbox?

  4. What i was meaning is with the old set up (big engine, 1600 gearbox and 185 65 R15 tyres) I 'ran out of gears' far too quickly.

The bit about being in 4th at 30mph is not meant literally.

New gearbox set up means i change into 4th around 5omph mark, plus the revs are lower when cruising at motorway speeds than before.

The how to keep your vw alive guide for the complete idiot says Vdubs prefer 2-4000rpm as an idiot I've listened and that is how I drive.

  5. i'm glad that's been cleared up!

  6. I just use 1st for maximum cooling:confused:

  7. Been looking for an early T25 box also, who's the guy you used?

  8. If someone else wants to come drive my bus to show me it's my driving style, they're more than welcome? I've got a rev limiting rotor arm, if I removed this and thrashed the tits off of it through the gears I'm sure I'd get atleast forty before I changed to fourth ;)

  9. Look back at our pm conversation a few weeks ago it may refresh your memory.

  10. Sorry mate, yeah I've got it, tried to ring them twice and had no answer hence trying elsewhere. Thanks :)

  12. Right, I've been out in Lardy, 1st gear to change into 2nd at about 15mph, then up to 28mph where I changed into 3rd and fourth at a push was 43mph.
Driving harder to get the speed and gear spacing , this sound about right then?
Must've been upto 3500/4000 plus every time, I know it wasn't anymore or the limiter would've kicked in like it did from first to second.

  13. This is on the 1600?

  14. Ditch the rev limiter. You're driving it like a granny,or, of you're only achieving that speed from a 2 litre it's either worn out or setup badly so a gearbox won't change matters
    :)

  15. Yeah

  16. Hmmmmnm it's revving high when I change gear, I don't want to thrash the absolute sh@t out of it, that'd be pointless!

  17. i'm confused, i thought it was a 2 litre you had?. No wonder its that slow, its a lawnmower.
    :)

  18. ignore my previous post. I don't think you're driving it right or you're thinking its revving hard when it isn't. Are you sure you don't have a slipping clutch? Remember these rev up beyond 5k so you're nowhere near to thrashing it
    :)

  19. Like I said earlier fella, if someone wants to come drive it and show me I'm driving it wrong that'd be appreciated?

  20. No mate, Alex at www.road-star.co.uk I think he's based in Surrey. I bought a recon 5 rib from him for a good price and he took my 3 rib as the exchange unit. He also does rebuilds, ratio changes etc. sent my box via pallet line.
