Wilma (Nov 1 72) has early style rear windows too (only found that out when we ordered late ones and rubbers) originally I think one fixed, 1 slider We should have compared notes @Zebedee this weekend as we share birthdays (if I remember rightly)
I have a VW certificate for my my Westy and gives a build date of 29 August 1972. I have a petrol flap, high indicators, grey instruments. I rebuilt my rear brakes last year including new backing plates and I don't remember any problems getting parts? Somewhere I have a picture from when I rebuilt them and will post when I find it. Let me know if you need me to check anything else on the van.
Before Ibrought the subject up a couple of years ago no one seemed to take Much notice of them so we are kind of a proving ground in this thread. I called them late crossovers for that is how i see the process from early to early crossover . Late crossover to late bay.
I think it's to do with servo brakes. On '71 and '72 vans, there was two positions for the resevoir, above the kick panel for non servo vans and behind the drivers seat for servoed vans because the servo is master cylinder is further back on a servo. I think they moved it so it could be in one position regardless of whether the van had servo brakes or not.
If they are the og clocks then I am guessing they would be like hens teeth it being a one year only production. If it is as this thread is trying to establish.
Mines a June 73 built in Australia, has most of the features above, but grey clocks in KPH, 1800 cc with engine hatch, lock in slider handle, fixed quaters, fuel flap, early 3 screw lights, early tank sender, wash/wipe stalks, I replaced the steering box a few years ago, but can't remember what year box I fitted. And its a converted unwelded panel conversion. I changed the steering wheel a few years ago but it was an early type.
Just stumbled across this thread. My July 72 built Latebay has, lock in the handle sliding door, early cast steering box (not a good thing), flared arches, no servo, 72-74 steering column but with the early spline size. late brakes (except the lack of a servo). The fuel tank is also early latebay. Hence the username. Oh and 3 bolt headlights. Forgot, also just 3 leavers on the heater controls.
Mine is March 73, -lock in handle. A petrol flap, Not sur about steering wheel and column. Early grey speedo in grey not black and in miles not kilometre's, no trip, early three screw headlight rim, no idea on brake set up, inner door handle all black with single latch, brake reservoir under drivers seat, 2 speed wipers, can't remember if stalks have English writing on, think they too worn to see, coat hanger engine hatch thingy, and it's a Devon.
