Are campsites getting more expensive?

  1. Charging for dogs?! WTF? We all have to make a living but some folk do replace dialasis machines.
Does the local fire authority stipulate the maximun number of pitches on a site? If that's so the argument that an awning means less spaces is a load of bull.

That's why we don't go there any more!

  3. Shame as it looks a really nice site in a fantastic location :(

  4. I was looking at one in new forest and it was £18 a night and £28 at weekends, hook up an additional £6 a night so tbat makes a week £176!! Could stay in a hotel for that!

It's well nice Dave, shame about the prohibitive pricing!

  6. I try to stay in sites that a priced per person as per pitch is just too expensive if your on your own.
Going to back to Llandudno today as got it for a £10 per night with hook up.

  7. Was reading there rules on groups as well ,how basically if there busy no groups but in the week there allowed ,plus I've never seen so many different pitches and prices ever

It used to be a really chilled out site. Now its number-plate recognition, rules and bewildering prices!

  9. Other things happen after 1am ;)
And I expect to be able to have as many tents next to my bay as possible, an awning the size of the chelsea flowershow marquee, my entire pack of hunting hounds free of charge and bacon, eggs and milk delivered to the slider at 8am sharp every morning.

  10. Many sites are a total rip off these days. Just stayed at one (which shall remain nameless) which charged £22 for 2 adults and two kids per night. We wanted to stay a few days - I paid for a couple of nights up front, and stayed for 5. No one came to ask for any more cash so we just cleared off this morning, saving ourselves £66.
Now, I'm sure someone will call me dishonest, but what have I stolen? We didn't have EHU, we used the bogs a few times, occupied a few square yards of an otherwise almost empty field, filled our water carrier up once, and paid a quid a time to use the shower for 5 minutes. The site was heaving over the BH weekend so the owners will have absolutely coined it in for 3 days. Do I feel guilty? Not really.

As long as someone else paid for your stay eh?
Hope they send you the bill.
One of several legitimate reasons prices go up.

  12. So to summarise - petrol prices all go up - campsite prices all go up - the weather gets worse and worse.

    :(

ermmmm no, petrol is cheaper at the moment than it has been for ages (i'm paying £130.9) the weather has been excellent the last 3 bank holidays this year and I've camped in the van 12 nights so far this year with no rain bar a small shower while setting up last Friday - things are on the up! campsites though are getting dearer unless you find a low facility site.

I wonder if a cheap campsite thread is an idea? or maybe it would get cluttered? i'm thinking something along the lines of listing the price and details of if the owner is open to a barter on the price if you're alone or don't use electric etc? Lord Congi may be a perfect person to offer advice as he camps a lot.

  15. The only way to combat this is to start rumors that camping is unfashionable and "so yesterday" then all the twonks that think the're "living the dream" will bugger off and stay in B & B 's, sell their vans and then the prices will go down again. Then, the EU needs to do the investigation into oil company price fixing and it needs to be on the front page of the daily mail, everyone and their dog will be outraged and then petrol/diesel will go down to 50p per litre....................Happy dayso_O

  16. I know I made a lot of jokey comments on here but here is my view. There are a finite amount of campsites in the UK but camping has seen a surge in popularity over the last 5 years or so. The rise of "go outdoors" type organisations selling a tent, 4 sleeping bags and a cooker for £200 quid has meant many families who can't afford a foreign holiday (or even one in the UK) are having a bash at camping. And good on them I say. As more people are camping and there are a fixed number of sites simple free market economics (supply and demand) kicks in. The sites are businesses and this is what they do. If you think there is a site that is taking the mick and providing low quality facilities but demanding 5 star prices then simply go elsewhere.

Camping is still cheaper than hotels.

jonspadge valid comments and totally correct, that said it's just annoying that if you wish to camp and not use facilities or use a massive amount of electricity etc you get charged the same - our vans are small and yet get charged the same as a very large coachbuilt transit or the like, tents usually get a lower rate I belive we should be able to take that option - it should be on size not type.

In there defence campsites charge what the market will pay.

In the last few years lots of new people have taken up camping but they want hook up, nice toilets, nice cut grass, shops, good roads, hard standing and bigger pitches to fit the size of the new tents etc.

    This all costs
also a few years ago the rules changed and campsites have to pay commercial rates for waste witch put costs up have a look at the bins on a sunday to see the amount of waste.
Hook up cost a lot to install and people feel they have paid for it so will use it i saw one tent with a heater going and they had gone out for the day but we all pay in the end.

My parents worked for 2 years at Warcombe Farm and yes it is expensive but the toilets blocks are as good as you will get in a good hotel you get nice pitches in a great location and prove is that they are normally booked up all summer holidays.

Reading Martin Dorys right up he paid £70 a night in France so its not just us

The cheaper sites are out there but don't expect the same level of facilities

I was looking to take to the high road next weekend somewhere south but prices are as mentioned getting silly so fingers crossed my father isn't using his apartment in Bexhill next weekend.

The toilet blocks at Warcombe farm did used to be superb admittedly. Last time we went the paint was peeling from the ceilings. Higher prices and worse conditions is not a good combination.
I've never struggled to get in there in about 10 years of going so don't know about it being full all summer.
