Any ideas why engine bay side hacked back?

  1. Has anyone any ideas why this corner of my engine bay would have been cut back?

My guess is that my van might have had aircon at some point and it was cut back to fit the aircon pump there - have seen it there on some vans. Any other thoughts?

There are also two big holes in the wheel arch on the same side that I can't account for.

Am going to have to do some patching as at the moment there is a huge gap between the engine tin (not fitted in picture before someone mentions that!) and the hacked side of the engine bay, and to keep water from coming in the wheel arch holes.

    Thanks.

that's odd indeed! the bit that's hacked is part of where the missing tinware would slot into the foam seal onto the bodywork's corresponding profile

  4. Mice?

  5. If it's mice I don't think I want to meet one of them while working on the van - must have some pretty hefty teeth to get through that!

  7. Yep that'll be a LHD USA import I bet??

Well it is from the VW of America dealer installed air conditioning the big bit is from where the pump would have been and the holes are for the pipes.

Yours is probably on of the worst I have seen though, mine is just the slope bit that the foam attaches to that has been hacked off.

  8. Yes LHD US import (via Japan!).

Thanks for the clarification and confirmation that it was what I thought - just wanted to make sure that nobody thought it was something sinister that I should investigate further.

Have just realised that aircon will also explain the extra holes under the front cab that I noticed the other week - it's all making sense now...

Will try and make myself up a plate that fills where the hacked bit should be over Easter and rivet it in - really need to get myself a welder again I think now that I'm back with an older vehicle!!!

    Thanks as always everyone.

  11. Had a similar thing on mine which is a German import. The raised bit which has the chassis no. On has been cut off. I was initially worried in case it was a ringer. But everything matches up from the other plates ;)

  12. Has the chassis number been cut out too?? o_O

  13. The battery tray on that side looks like its well loaded with fiberglass aswell

  14. Mmm, I missed that!! o_O

  16. Tank breather is swinging free in that pic too...

  17. Yes, luckily my chassis number is still there.

That isn't a breather pipe hanging, it's the end of some sheathing going up in to the van for the leisure battery wire.

Yes, that is fibreglass over the battery tray. That was actually me as a temporary fix until I get in to welding again - I knew someone would pick up on that when I uploaded the photo )

    Thanks.

  18. :D

We won't flame you too much ;)

  19. Nah no problem with that at all to keep your own bus errm bussing:thumbsup:

Id only have a problem with that if i was buying a bus or had just paid out big money for a resto

Its not structural so as long as your leisure battery doesent fall out it can stay for a long time

There was a period of time a few years ago where busses were so cheap that temp repair was an expensive move lol

  20. Looking again I realise it is just a piece of tin you have missing. Do you have it? It will mean much less work to sort it out.
