Any cheap bay wrecks available anywhere anymore?

  1. Hi all
After a few years enforced baylessness I am trying to get back into bay ownership. I've had one late and two earlies before, followed by a year or two with a T4 Caravelle. The T4 was reliable, practical but basically a soulless lump of plastic. The wife is less than happy about me blowing a load of money on a bay, especially as prices for decent vehicles has more than doubled since I last had one. A compromise would be for me to buy the cheapest possible bay and go through it methodically over the next few years, one section at the time. I appreciate all the downsides, but the advantage of spreading the cost and biding my time, picking up parts from ebay, gumtree and the bay forums as and when they become available is the main attraction. I'd love to go and splash out 10k on a decent bus, but that isnt going to happen. So I am forced to seek out the kind of bus that five years ago would have been scrapped without a second thought. A rolling shell would be fine, doors/engine/glass/interior not required, but would be a bonus. I'm handy with a welder, and I know I'm letting myself in for a world of hurt. I know how bays rust, and also when to draw the line. What is the cheapest bay available now that can get me back into bay ownership before I miss out completely? Northern England preferred but not essential. And it can't be that bad that it would implode while I load it onto a trailer.......:)

it's a shame you didn't show up a few weeks ago, zed was shifting a tidy but in need of work for less than a grand, there's one on evil bay at the moment for 2500 - depends on budget - why not look on the samba for a less rusty import? they have some sheds that although may be initially more expensive would save a fortune in the long run? even if the shipping and purchase costs 2500 the savings after would be worthwhile?

  3. Plenty of sheds on the road mate or ebay! hahah ;)

  4. A repairable shed at less than a grand would be perfect. I'm not looking at saving money in the long run, as I reckon I could easily be spending a couple of years getting it roadworthy. If I can keep the initial outlay as low as possible and then budget any parts needed into a few hundred quid at a time as and when I need them, thats the way forward.
I actually found a bay over here in Iraq... I had this crazy idea of buying it and driving it overland back to the UK when my contract is up. The owner wont sell it...:-(

  5. Their was one about recently - but I just bought it :)

    There'll always be another one...
Just look on ebay. ;) Do a completed listings search and see what the wrecks go for. I just did and there are 3 resto vans listed that actually sold (green price text) for under £1k.

  8. Thats a plan. I'm home toward the end of July, so putting out feelers now. I'll only have a window of a few days in which to find a bus and then get it trailered up to Pickering and packed into the garage ready for my next leave. I'm considering absolutely anything, any condition or any type. And if anyone fancies a trade against guitar stuff, that might make things easier. I'll pop an ad in the classified bit later.

  9. I paid 350 Euros for mine. :)

  10. we have it now and she will be a mild custom trick van - and i will say he got a cracking deal its a tidy van - I am looking for a shed of a van that i can build a slammed chopped mico caravan out of

  11. Most of my vans I discovered in peoples gardens ,I bet there are still a load kicking about...

I have alwaysed bought a cheap one and worried about the cost of the restoration later....

A good plan if your handy...

evil bay has killed off a lot of cheap vans, everyones an expert and thinks the wreck in the garden's worth thousands.

  17. no I haven't, there is a light green 1 up Starkholmes, the pink and purple bay on the road from Ambergate to Heage, the Matt black palamino conversion is at Darley Dale in a back garden, that was owned by a strange chap they called the dog whisperer, and the Orange bay is mine ha ha.

Ahh Ive not seen the matt black one, I work in Darley Dale, I guess an explore is needed!! I saw the k plate earlier but it didn't look right, it had the 76 & onwards engine lid and the petrol cap over the flap and later slider..looked nice and tidy though!

There is a sky blue bay around Darley Dale too, on Dale Rd North somewhere

  19. the Matt black 1 is past Darley Dale garage and Tollbar racing on way to Bakewell. look right behind the 2 semi detatched houses set back before the turn off up Northwood Lane...it's got a bit of tarpaulin hanging off it...bit unusual conversation too.

  20. sheds on legs i like that it has a ring to it.....wounder if i can put one on top of my camper like....a bedroom dudes....yea now thats a thought.....mmm just maybe.
