We are hoping to go to Wales in the summer. I haven't said when as I don't know when the van will be ready as, I want to use the little one.

    Reply on club 80 90.

that is the oil warmer cooler which should be connected to the water pump and the thermostat housing, there was a period when the 2.1 thermostat housing was unobtainable so I would guess they used the 1.9 thermostat housing (and maybe water pump - or just blanked the spigot on the pump) and deleted the oil warmer cooler and pipework, the two metal pipes and the rubber hoses add up to a good few quid saved if they needed replacing at that time and weren't readily available either

This is getting interesting now. On club 80 90 people are saying it is a 1900 cooler and my van would have had a 1900 originally and it looks as if someone has put the DJ engine in and bypassed the cooler to save dosh. I was told by the PO that it was all OG, and if I was going to the expense of fitting a DJ engine throwing out 112 bhp I defo wouldn't have bypassed the oil cooler to save a few pence, but the heating system doesn't look as if it had any connections for the cooler in the first place?

  4. what's a cooler? @Ploptop2

    ah oil cooler:D

got a picture of your engine?

    Oil cooler/ warmer.

The early system on my van had no access point for the cooling pipes so, I guess they bypassed the oil cooler to save expense. Could be the reason for my overheating although I doubt it would have driven 120 miles on hot summer's day if it was.

  6. it has to get to the radiator ,even with the thermastat out it would have overheated in ten minutes...

While I have been mulling this over ( I do know full well how a standard cooling system works btw, but t25s are odd ) I have realised the little leak in the rad that I noticed when I first got it, is probably the culprit. I never topped it up and over time that small leak would have caused a fair bit of water loss. The system on a t25 has to be fully topped up and doesn't work with 3/4 of the water without overheating. Some guy on club 80 90 took the time to explain this to me. I think he is right!

  9. I have worry switches ,I can turn my vans radiator fan on ,someone in club 80-90 had a go at me ,saying the engine does'nt need "worry swiches"

But when I broke down and lost all the water ,the worry switch worked ace ,thing is I kept topping it up (not bleeding) and it's better than ever temp wise...The proper expansion tank did a great job of sucking water from the other tank...(when needed)

Fix the rad ,the more pressure the system is under the more it will leak...

    and fix a worry switch...;)

It's all back together. I haven't filled yet as it needs to run while I am filling and guess who made the schoolboy error of not charging the battery?

It's on charge now. Fill tomorrow and hope I haven't toasted the head gasket one one of the heads when I boiled her :(

  11. Malc,
Looking at your pic of the old thermostat, is that how it came out. .?
It looks like the centre has been cut out already !!
If that's the case then I don't think that's going to be your cause of overheating.
The central part is the bit that opens and closes as the engine gets warm, allowing the water to flow.
I hope I'm wrong and it does sort it but my guess would be head gasket gone pressurising the system hence why it keeps blowing the hoses.
Good luck with it tomorrow :thumbsup:

Well. She is up and running. I filled her, let her run and opened the bleed valve on the rad and brimmed her. She has been running for 50 minutes and hasn't overheated yet. I gave her some high revs after 40 minutes to get the temp gauge up to half and to try and get the fans to kick in and she moved to half, I let her run for another ten minutes to check for leaks and she sat at half no bother.

I have videoed it and will load them to youtube to link people later. Looks positive atm as I also found the rad leak was on a badly seated bleed screw. I will have to renew that.

So now I have had an hour to think things over, I am totally confused.

I drove this van back from Wales in very hot weather knowing full well it had overheating issues and it was absolutely fine. It didn't get hot or boil at any point. I drove it around for three weeks last summer and she went great. I did notice a small water leak from the rad valve, but thought little of it. Then suddenly one day I popped into town and she boiled over liked a steam engine and popped the rubber hose. I inspect it and find out there was no thermostat. I have now replaced the stat and pipe and run it up for an hour with no water issues at all.

Did the low water level cause the issue, is it something underlying, and if the head or gasket was blown would it run for 50 minutes without issue?

  18. Yes , low water level cause the overheat. Don't over think it. Take it for a long drive and see what happens

I took her out for a 5 mile run today. I chose the two steepest hills locally and gave her a good run. She never got above halfway on the temperature gauge and took a couple of miles to get above the quarter mark. She pulled like a train and drove like a dream!
