Yeah, that's what LEF said. I haven't had a problem on standard upright engines heads before, but never done a VW wasser before. They were new heads 16 months ago, so should be pretty slack. Hopefully.

  3. Cylinder heads are cylinder heads ,when you are taking them off you really need to discover something ,tis no use removing them to find nothing wrong ,here is talking from experience...

Decided to fit the small fiddly expansion hose beneath the alternator..

    This one

It is not easy to get at so, I had to remove the chrome pipe, the dipstick tube and the altenator.

Scraped knuckles and broken finger nails was a small price to pay. Sorted now.

VW have a habit of always having one inaccessible part on the easy jobs.

    Question for @davidoft

These 2 pipe fittings were open ( no hose connected to either ) when I took the thermo housing off. It is a early 2.1 engine and housing. Do you know what they are and if they should be connected? They seem to go around the oil filter housing. cooler?

I don't know what it's off but it's an oil cooler, should go to the water system but it may have been "updated"

Okay usually. I could easily have snapped it though. It felt quite weak on this because I couldn't really add any heat.

On the up side. I cleaned up the engine ID plate and it is indeed a DJ 2.1 engine. Who needs a scooby when you have the hen's teeth 112 bhp orignal jobby?

    From VWHERITAGE.

The fuel injected 2.1 from 1985-on (with 87-95bhp) is brilliant and can be made to produce a bit more poke if you (legally in the UK) remove the catalytic converter. The pick of the bunch, if you can find one, is the 2.1 carrying the DJ engine code which produces an eye-watering 112bhp and has a surprising amount of usable torque. Being fuel injected any running problems are likely to be a result of faulty sensors, so make sure it idles nicely and doesn’t cut out when warm.

Seems some added the oil cooler plate as a option, but never plumbed it in or bypassed it! The above post makes me wonder whether a oil cooler might be better plumbed in. 112 bhp is from a old engine is gonna take some cooling!

I purposely let the t25 slip. The LT was an oversight, but it made no difference, nobody wants to go camping in our house cept me!
