When I had 40mm inlet valves my engine looked like this.

That was 2020cc but the cam was a bit much for a bus. It's in someone's Beetle now.

This is better, 2413cc and standard cam. :)

  4. Heads will definitely not help you, specially if running a single carb on long manifold, you will lose air speed due to big valves/ports and the manifold/carb will never let the heads breath at higher revs. Ideally a stock heads with mild flowing and decent valve job as @paradox suggested.
I have flowed big valve heads on my flow bench and have seen worse flow at low valve lift vs stock. This is because 40mm intake valve is much more shrouded. A flat roof chamber with 35.5 inlet and good 3 angle with valve reshape will flow much better for what you want and fit with your carb choice. Sell the heads, find a set of EuroMax or good 043 ones and drop me a PM to sort them for you.

  5. Sounds like I've been given pretty duff advice when buying the heads, Marmite bags. I explained the situation, what I wanted to use it for etc and apparently these heads were going to give the results I wanted...live and learn I guess. Done a few thousand on them now so there's no taking them back. Going to have to hold on to them for a while longer defo no budget for that with an impending wedding and house purchase!

  6. Have you noticed any flat spots or a "power band" with the heads you have? If so then this is indicative of low flow at low lift. Don't beat yourself up at it can be remedied later on. So long as you can use the bus and keep the misses happy :)

  7. Yeah it's an absolute dog at low revs, not helped by the fact that I've still got a 009 on it. I've got a cheapo accuspark SVDA dizzy to trial in a bid to help alleviate things. As you say there does appear to be a higher rev range where the engine pulls really well, but that's in comparison to the poor performance at low range.

Just read you're other write up with the graphs on btw, Good work.

As and when funds allow I'll be looking for a new set based on your recommendations. In the meantime should you come across a good set of heads that could work for me would you let me know? I may be able to sneak some monies out of the fund!

  8. Maybe an engine builder like @ Robert parry would do you a swap for some stock valves heads
Hope you get it sorted one way or another
