34 Pict 3 on 1776

  1. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I've had an T1 engine built to provide a bit more torque, I'm not too fussed on performance just want a strong reliable runner. Engine was built as follows: New Ali case, stock (from 1600) internals, larger bore barrels and pistons and a nice set of head from stateside. I want to run it with a single carb (primarily for ease of tuning a single carb, not having to fanny around with linkages etc and reliability - only half the amount of things to go wrong than twin carbs!), ideally the 34 pict 3.

The 34 pict 3 I'm running is a tad on the worn side so I'm looking to replace it in the near future. I've seen the new/extensively refurbished genuine 34 PICT 3 on Machine 7, has anyone had any experience of these? worth the bunts? If I do go down this route is it likely the engine would run better with slightly larger jets? can the be done?

Alternatively can anyone recommend a single carb option other than the 34 pict 3?

You could use a Webber progressive. Some people swear by them, some swear at them. I think @Mattlad has one on his 1776.
Personally I'd do twin Dells and get the most out of the engine!

  3. Yeah, I'd thought about progressive 32/36 carb, think I'd have to change my 009 to SVDA if I were to go down that route. @Mattlad How do you find the progressive carb?

I did get a nice set of DRLAs to go one but I flogged them a while back. I've got the oil filter stand etc in place still so was reluctant to go chopping things out, then thought about the easy life of having a single carb and decided to sell them. Lets face it, it's never going to be a racer!

  4. I'm going to be running a solex on a 1776
They are easy enough to rebuild yourself and fit new spindle bushes

What is the spec of the heads your using?

  5. @snotty was looking at useing a standard Solex 34 pict 3 on his 1776 but he`s been playing with a set of twins so may have binned the idea and gone
to the dark side ....

    :hattip:

  6. no reason why you couldn't fit a single DRLA or IDF...manifolds are available, but a good Pict/Pierburg will work and you'll have marginally less hassle with the throttle cable linkage and an autochoke, plus the stock pre heat filtration system which is essential for long intake runnered aircooled

I imagine you will have to experiment with idle and main jetting, but not much

  7. Still on the cards when I've finished painting my ratty tinware. I can't think of any reason why a single stock Solex wouldn't work.

  8. I'll dig the paper work out later and let you know...

  9. My only consideration the 34 pict 3 would be jetted/setup for a 1600 and was worried about enough fuel in. To be fair it seems to be running ok although I've only done 1000 miles or so so can't tell too much at this stage.

  10. A 1776 is barely 200cc bigger. Keep an eye on your plugs.

  11. Heads from stateside were a set of his machined heads with 40 x 33 valves. He recommended using these based on the fact it isn't going to be a screamer and I wanted to run it with heat exchangers. Weren't cheap though...

Those are big valves. I think grumpy Jim is a bit nuts personally. What would he have recommended for a screamer?
Those valves are bigger than i have in my 2.4L.

  13. Nice Reece Fish would work well on that, still a few knocking about, rumour has it they may be back in production mid 2016.

  14. The 40s are indeed enormous.

  15. Think there'd be any problems having oversized valves?

He's not the chirpiest of guys is he?!

  16. What's a reese fish?!

  17. It's all a bit pointless unless you get it set up on a rolling road ...you can't really guess what the air \fuel ratio is . Twins are a much better bet or FI .a decent linkage wouldn't move ....you can buy FI kits

    See what happens. :)
    what's rest of the spec?

I wouldn't think a std solex would feed those valves. A pair of ICT's minimum or Dells would be better. Then again what do I know, I'm often surprised how well what seem to me like strange engine specs actually perform in the real world.

  20. To be fair no adverse affects so far.

All standard internals, vintage speed exhaust - standard one. I guess as and when I can spice it up if I feel the need.
