34 Pict 3 on 1776

  1. Variable choke down draught carb, popular back in the day and simple to tune.

  2. Profit before Wisdom. Take the heads back or sell them on. What you should have with the setup you want is std inlet valves with the ports reworked, works fact.

  3. As the others have said those valves are far too big
    Are the heads ported aswell?

  4. @baybirmingham had the carb set up when he had the engine I bought off him built up.

I have done nothing to it apart from stuck the engine in my van and drive it.

I'm happy with the progressive as I always starts easy and the engine has more power than the one it replaced. It's running a standard exhaust.

In the states don't they use single carbs on bigger engines - good for torque or something? May have made that up...,

  5. Yes the yanks call them stump pullers

@Mattlad is a bit of a "Stump Puller" I've heard....

  8. erm, yeah, from what I remember they were ported. poop.

What problems are likely to arise from this? under fueling? What kind of damage would this cause?

Can the jets in a solex 34 pict 3 be enlarged to help feed it better?

  9. Your going to loose low down torque with those heads
I think the engine may feel pretty flat throughout the Rev range tbh
Are you using a stock cam?

Stock valve sizes with three angles and mild reshaping of the ports is what you want

  10. The stock solex jets can be reamed out larger if needed
But it won't sort out the problems caused by massive valves on a mild engine

  11. Just found this on here... http://www.vw-resource.com/jets.html#34

I'm running a 009 so a few points raised on here along with the possible under fueling would explain some of the hesitation. Can anyone point me in the right direction for new jets? Would prefer to buy some rather than ream the existing ones out.

After that it looks like a swap to an SVDA distributor is advised. Anyone got a decent one they're prepared to sell?

    Snippet from the link...

Carburetor Jetting With a 1776cc Engine
Regarding the 1776cc engine: the stock 34PICT/3 carburetor with a fractionally larger main jet and a fractionally smaller air correction jet to suit the higher air flow being asked of the carburetor should suit nicely. The 34PICT normally has a X127.5 main and a 140Z or 170 air correction jet. So with a vacuum distributor, using a 55 idle, X130 or X132.5 main and about a 100 - 120Z air correction jet should provide good mixture for a 1776, without affecting fuel economy to badly (fuel consumption WILL be a little higher with the larger capacity though).

For a 1776cc engine with 009 distributor, 55 idle, X132.5 or X135 main, and air correct around 80Z should be close to the mark.

Change the main first and do a plug read as above. This will tell you if it's running rich or lean at speed and then you can set the air correction jet accordingly (smaller air correction means richer mixture - is delivers air so it works the opposite to a main jet. The air correction jet affects mostly the high rpm -- not much effect on low-middle rpm).

Try to use the leanest main jet you can -- too rich will only result in the cylinder oil film being diluted more, and this means higher cylinder wear.

  12. I'd always advise a vac dizzy for a bus
The powerspark vac advance with electronic module to replace the points worked fine for me

  14. hi ..

I have a 34PICT3 already jetted for a 1776 surplus to requirements that I may sell if you are interested.

I took it off my 1776 and replaced it with twin 40s.

  15. Yeah I could be interested in that. What sort of condition is it in?

  16. As far as I know it's fine - it'g got the manifold but it, just no air cleaner.

It came with the 1776 I bought but I took it off & fitted twin Dell 40's so never used it with the 34pict3 on.

The guy I bought the engine off (who also built the engine) is a bit of an engineer & in fact is just putting a TDi engine in the beetle my engine came out of (if you want to see the standard of his work look on VZi under TDi engine in beetle, or something like that (user name DC66) in the Readers Rides section) so I would guess that it's all good !

He told me the jet sizes, but I can;t find his email with them on, sorry!

  17. Still think your better off with twins or a proper rolling road session ..

  18. You could take the top off and tell us what the jets are ;)...
