2ltr conversion

  1. It will mate up to a 1600 gearbox, but the input shaft will be too short. It will drive fine too but the input shaft will be waggling about unsupported and the gearbox won't last long.

    Choices are either get a gearbox for the type 4 engine, get a longer input shaft or remove the roller bearing from the crank and get a machine shop to fit one into the flywheel.

    I chose the last option as it was by far the cheapest, £2 eBay bearing and £10 for the machine shop to drill the flywheel and press the bearing in. If you've got a pillar drill you could do this yourself.

    Oh and if you don't have the 2ltr gearbox the 228mm flywheel will need changing, the flywheel will fit in other gearboxes but the pressure plate is too big and won't fit! I thought it would and had to pull the engine out and change it.

    found it now under the crud, its a CU box? is that good or indifferent?

    I've read that from 75 on the bellhousings are deeper on the 1600 box, or am I just being hopeful?
     
  4. CU is a 1600 box... And yes, post 75 boxes have a deeper bellhousing :)

    So if I get the bearing set into the flywheel all should be ok?

    But you need to pull the one from the end of the crank!! :)

    Ok , the deal was I had to fit the shower in the en-suite before the engine, done that now and I'm back on this job!
    What's the best way of getting the bearing out of the end of the crank?
    I've got a new gland nut for a 1600 so I've tapped the bearing out of that which was easy cos you can get at the back of it and I'll get that fitted in the flywheel, but what kind of puller will get the one out of the crank end. Don't need to re use it so doesn't matter if it gets damaged?

    Also is the flywheel oil seal the same as 1600?
     
  10. No the flywheel seal isn't the same as the type 1's.

    I used a dremel type cutter to carefully cut the bearing out of the crank.

    I was told that you could get a piece of wooden dowel with the same diameter as the bearing inner. Put a bit blob of grease in the bearing, then hit the wooden dowel with a hammer. The hydraulic effect will pop the bearing out. I couldn't get this to work, so resorted to cutting it out.

    Thanks Mark, I've just found the right oil seal, will cut the old bearing out, cheers, Dunc.

    Oil seal ordered, flywheel and bearing gone to engineering shop.
    With a bit of luck this engine should be in this weekend!

    I'm a bit further forward with mine, trying to get the Solex carbs running right.

    Oh and I lost a spark plug down the cylinder head tin, doh. Had to remove it and found 3 other rusty old plugs, I think I'll take the otherside off too for a spring clean.

  14. magnetic pickup tool is handy for lost sparks on a type 4!!

    Bearing fitted to flywheel, bearing removed from crank, new clutch plate arrived, just waiting for the oil seal and then it's going in ! Can't wait now.

    Everything ready to go in, realised I need to cut the air filter bracket off, obviously then then engine surround had a hole in it under the bracket so the welder has to come out, ah well, there's always next weekend!

    Mine's a 2ltr GE (with carbs not injection) mated to a 1600 box. I'll dig out the details as I'm led to believe it results in a slightly lower top speed but slightly increased acceleration. However it also results in a sagging rear!

    Yeh I did think that might happen, lot more weight in this engine, just have to lower the front accordingly!
    It's going in tomorrow rain or shine, I'm sick of looking at it on ramps.
