Just want to check I'm not going to run into too many problems if I get a complete 2ltr type 4, to replace T1 1600
    In my 76.
Comes with everything, even snail fan,
If I've got it right ill just need to be careful getting the right clutch/ flywheel and longer input shaft? And make sure I get the mounting bar!
Am I going to find it geared a bit wrong with the 1600 box?
    Cheers

  2. not run one with a 1600 box but it should be do-able. Put bigger wheels/tyres on the back!

    Silver Needs points/will pay!

VWHeritage list a different accelerator cable for type4 engines, but I've not had to change one so don't know the difference. Cables is all that come to mind!

  4. My bus was a 1600 eng n box so I decided to put it back to original. I changed the whole shooting match. I know you can use a 2 ltr box on a 1600 but not sure about the other way.
As regards cable, I managed to use the existing one but it was a close call.
Gsf do them, I have one in the bus as a spare.

    Heavy buggers they are...

    :)

  7. when I bought my bus I was told it had its engine replaced with a 2L (to which I did the expected novice/girl approach "oh, cool!", and promptly thought no more about it) it trundles along lovely, but backfires like a bitch and struggles to get into 2nd & 3rd gears (still not sure if this is just me getting used to driving it??) - wasn't aware that lots of other bits would need changing too (or should have been), could these things be symptoms of the engine swap not being done properly? I have to take it to be inspected and verified for my V5, so I'm guessing that I should ask my mechanic to make sure all these other bits have been done at the same time!?

Your not kidding, can't believe how much heavier than 1600 they are!

  9. The weight is why they are sooooo much better than a type 1... all aluminium case, means a fair bit heavier, plus it's a very beefy engine

  10. There not too bad when everythings off. But fully built they are a fair old unit...

    I love em :)

  11. SarahF its probbaly bit the engine causing you the problems, the backfiring is probably an air leak or blowing exhaust somewhere and the not getting into gears may well be worn gear selection rod bushes as they will have been there for years allowing it to all get a bit sloppy. There is a knack to driving when they are worn!

Well it's out of the back of the Golf and nearer to where it's going,

But then I've been distracted today by my other new toy that I've picked up this morning!

It's brand new and it all works and the sun has been shining and it makes me smile like a Cheshire Cat riding it!!

    Cheers Paul it is!
Will be bringing it up your way in the not too distant future, Glentress and Innerleithen are amongst our favourite trails in the country, and the special deal at the Peebles Hydro makes for a cracking weekend!

  15. Peebles isn't too far from me... probably an hour and a half-ish

Been awhile since I ventured up there tho

  16. I bought my bus with 2ltr engine & 1600 box. Cracking in 1st &2nd but pretty cack in 3rd &4th. The lovely ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Paul weeding ^^^^^^^^sold me a 2ltr box a while back now and it drives awesome!

Well I've had a good look and measured stuff and it would appear that it should mate up ok with the gearbox! Without actually trying it in how would I tell if the input shaft needs changing?

  19. what box code is it?

It has a 2 letter prefix
