Are these 1.9TDi engines pokey enough for a bus?

I'll let you know when iv done it. I don't think it will be as nippy as a scooby but cruising on the motor way and A roads I think it will be great. I can't imagine it being any worse than standard

I'm all ears. 25mpg isn't fun. I'd like to use mine as only vehicle but I don't want to be spending £5-6K a year on petrol - I don't love it that much.

Well I know a few guys that have them in type 25s and the go well. I'm between west Oxfordshire and Cardiff at the moment. Always happy to hear other opinions on how to do things. I'll have to get some pics up soon

  6. It's more the ratios in the gearbox that are the issue... you need to get the cruising rpm down to make the most of the diesel torque and economy!! :)

  7. As Paul says , without changing the the gear ratios , you'll be thrashing the Tdi engine , with a road speed of 65mph and a fuel return in the very low thirties. Cooling was an issue for me when I did a conversion in the 80's despite having a radiator either side of the engine with electric fans. I've since seen conversions with the radiator under the cargo floor ,not suitable for lowered vans obviously. I seem to remember vibration being an issue although the engine I used, Perkins 4108 which was as primitive as a steam engine and weighed as much and despite rubber mountings lock tite was required on every nut and bolt. Good luck, the 1.9 Tdi is an excellent engine, the 1 z code in particular has more basic electrics .

  8. If you were to go down this route and if it were me , I'd seek out a rotten mk3 golf Tdi 1996 ish with a good engine , then you will have everything you need, all those spaghetti vacuum pipes connected up to the current buns and cup cakes bolted to the body.

But if you get one from a passat or a4 you can use the gearbox. A lot of the induction system is different too and fits in the engine bay better.

  10. guy on the samba has good long thread going at mo on tdi conversion ....ill find it now and link it

  11. There the gooden on first page of thesamba bay forum bit ....one i meant ,wont let me.link it for some reason...

  12. The problem with sucking air into the engine bay is where does the hot air escape ? Oil from an engine leak ends up on the rear of the bus indicating a vacuum so louvered flaps on the engine bay lid wouldn't help. Cooling is the biggest problem of all , I never fully cracked it , now if I had my own wind tunnel ...............

  13. get a road wheel,,,,,cut it up and add a rad embeded design fabricated into it ...mount as a front spare carrier ,so it looks like a stock front wheel.jobs a gooden......anyone else want a design imagined quick while im on a roll.....p.s.add water pump ,its long way to front mount a rad with engine at back init
