1.6tp conversion to a 2.0 aircool engine

  1. just about to fit my 1600tp and i worked out my fuel for next years holiday in the bus at 1300 quid .....now im thinking get a 2.0lt lump and cruise at better speed, better mpg,etc that comes with a reliable 2.0lt.....what do i need to keep and what do i need to change...?????my current engine is a 1600 twinport with 34 ict carbs ...bellcrank linkage and bugpack beetle exhaust...can i keep the carbs and rejet for 2.0lt....open to all suggestions....no scooby conversions ....wanna keep it aircooled and raise power and better mpg....open to swops on engines....i think i can get away with my gearbox as i researched the code on it and i just need to modify it slighty...but again open to suggestions on a complete touring engine set up that wont let me down and would throw back decent mpg in exchange for love ....to be honest i had enough of the 1600 lack of oooomphh...when outa town

  2. Stick with a 1776 type 1 with some decent carbs on!

I've done this but can't say I notice better fuel consumption, however it drives so much better pulls up hills etc
and it's so quiet I can actually have a conversation with my passengers without shouting!

  4. If you're gonna do the 2l conversion, then ideally you want to put the 2l gearbox in too!!

  5. so 1776....keep my old engine ,get it uprated....sounds good....i was under the impression paul...that the gearbox just need modifying ...,thanks for the heads up paul...i assumed the mpg would be a touch better ,do i just buy a kit of some sort to d0 the conversion upto 1776cc.....also will a compufire kit do it good while spending bucks as it gona be a daily runner for me and wife after she passes her test....then ill buy myself a bus

I cant see the savings in fuel (minimal, if any) would out weigh the huge difference in type 1 and type 4 parts prices.
If you want power, I'd go for it; if you want economy, I wouldnt bother.

  7. All my type 4 engines are very thirsty beasties, but then if the fuel economy worried me right now I wouldn't own a bay! As PW says ideally you'll want a 2 litre box to go with it. T4 engines are expensive to build, parts are more expensive to procure and sometimes harder to find, but then the + is they are more robust with it. All round they are torquier than a stock lawnmower engine but as others have said you could go bigger with your type 1 motor, likely at a fraction of the cost and carry a lot of parts over. There is no carryover between lawnmower and type 4.

It also depends on how you will drive it, you're more likely to drive quicker and use the power more if its there so more likely to consume more fuel that way also. I'll look at my fuel bills at some point and work it out, if I'm getting more than 17mpg I'd be very surprised...

I have just part exchanged a T2 for a T5, I intend at the mo to put the T2 on me mates hire fleet, the T2 has a new 1776 with high lift cam, articulated rockers and big twin webers , has a rolling road print out showing higher Bhp than a standard 2L
Not ideal for hire, we are toying with taking it out and sticking a standard new or newish 1600TP in it, so we may be selling it hoping to cover the cost of the standard engine.

  10. No easy answer re fuel consumption, Johnny. You're talking about a van designed in the 70s when petrol was 35p a gallon. Type 1s or type 4s are going to drink fuel compared with modern vehicles. Lot of additional stuff necessary for type 4s, and spares are expensive. Could stick a modern diesel in, but then you've got the prob of radiator & plumbing.

    Buy a T4. Or a Bongo.

Seems like vw tdi is the way to go. You'll still need to get the ratios in the gearbox changed. Should be well worth it though.

  13. This^^

It is the most overlooked factor of engine conversions!!

  14. sod it ...when everyone goes scooby conversions.....johnny goes tdi .......

  15. There was a Split with a 1.9 Tdi in one of the sheds at Busfest - no tin ware to bother with - looked good!

1.9tdi afn from an audi a4. It's about 110bhp but won't be running a power steering pump or air con pump so that should help too. Still got loads to do but going ok so far
