Cam follower perhaps, pop off the rocker covers and see if and rockers are loose

 

does the noise go away when you depress the clutch?

I'd try the old screwdriver to the ear diagnosis trick......with the engine running, put a big screwdriver handle against your ear and move around the engine, pressing the blade end onto various parts of the casing....it'll be obvious where the noise is greatest....at which point it'll be easier to suss out the likely offender.....as davidoft suggested....a stuck cam follower would sound like this, but it's notoriously difficult to diagnose from vid sound tracks

if you don't want to remove a valve cover, put the screwdriver blade against each pushrod tube in turn....mahoosive valve lash will be more than obvious

 

when new, was it a tur(n)key engine?

FTFY ....would it have been so hard to type that in the first place ......Keep up at the back.

Could it be a loose brush holder in the alternator .....damaged alternator bearings giving a bit of play causing fan to rub?

 

Maybe it's the ham shank shaft

 

I depress my clutch by mentioning that interest rates aren't likely to rise in the near future.

It sounds like my old injun when cam follower stuck slowly mashed the cam lobe and them had no adjustment on valves either side on that lobe !

Wasn't going to get drawn into this.... but, it sounds very much to me that there is a flock of turkeys in that engine bay. Do I win a meat hamper.

So I have left it and given it a damn good ignoring and it seems to be OK now.

However, after leaving it and not being able to get the sound to come back I took it for a test drive and again all was fine.

So, I then let it sit and I checked the oil level, confession time, it was a bit low. As in just touching the bottom line. The noisy lifter is now quiet after a bit more oil.

Could it be that simple? And yes I know I am that simple.

Will use it tomorrow with radio up loud, i mean off,and see what happens!!
