No I chickened out in the end. The bottom of the engine is very dry it may need basting in it.

 

In between all the jokes I think we've covered most of the possibilities between us, if it comes back it will be a case of eliminating them one by one

What gas mark, I mean temperature do you think the oil was when you checked it?

 

Yes it could be, mine was very rattley one day due to low oil, top up fixed it good as new

...and putting the screw driver on moving parts like the pulley is not recommended.

 

Drove it to work today and its fine, looks like it was just a lifter being overly noisy due to low oil.

I also have a proper stethoscope style thing for listening to engine parts. I'll do a pic
