You're off on your assumption... We've had this discussion already... The oil flow is never shut off to the oil filter... Defeats the purpose of fitting a filter sandwich plate... How it works is the oil goes into the outside of the filter head, through the stat valve down into the filter and returns to the engine... But the stat valve is never fully closed, and there is just a reduced flow through the cooler... Once the oil reaches temp and the stat valve fully opens, then the oil flows fully through the cooler and the filter... This has been confirmed by the guys at thinkauto
i may have to disagree with you on that. you may tell me otherwise.. the oil comes into the stat from filter head to valve which is open when cold, oil can travel past this to filter or round cooler loop back to filter which is also open. when oil gets hotter the valve closes not opens cutting flow direct to filter only leaving loop for cooler open which it goes around and then to the filter
One thing I found with the empi filter head was that it was covered in scratches on the oil filter sealing surface. It leaked. In the end I used fine wet and dry sandpaper on a hard flat sheet to smooth the scratches. People claim that on a cold day you can pop an average filter or blow out the oil filter seals with a big oil pump e.g. 30mm and 20/50 oil. Hence the FRAM HP1 is sold. But if you watch youtube it looks like the Wix filters are better made and cheaper.
oil flow from mocal as you say oil is never cut off from filter but when cold it flows in 2 directions, down through by-pass to filter and also out to cooler and back to filter. when oil gets hot the by-pass closes leaving oil 1 route to travel, thats through the cooler and then to filter. looking at the mocal stat you can't stop flow to cooler just reduce amount by the by-pass being open when cold.
I think my over cooling was a stuck thermostat rod holding the flaps open. Showing it is a bad idea leaving the flaps wired open in a British winter
this is what i have finally done to mine thanks to @MorkC68 trying to sort out some unions.. the starting point, this is where its going. case is already drilled and tapped with a cooler fitted but removed because it was crap. mocal filter head mounted using a bracket just infront of the support bar the stat is mounted under filter head and oil filter mounted to that(full of oil) a tip from i think from @mikedjames and the pipes routed down to the cooler which is tucked into the space under the battery tray rear tin put back in with a little cutting and welding/melting the hoses used are the push on type and will wait to see if they leak before any clamps are used the oil filter was from a passat/golf /bora they seem to be much the same £5 rather than the fram hp1 £25 as not good reports for the price. the filter head is mounted just infront of the support bar which means the filter is to the front but not below the bar and the rocker cover so may be in line for flying stones but have attached a deflecter plate, not pictured and the cooler mounted behind the wheel but tucked up under battery tray will also get a deflecter plate fitted thats the next job. my arches don't seem to have the closing plates to the rear so will have make some to attach the deflecter plates too one thing i learnt with the push on hose is to really warm it up to get it onto the barbed unions. with the straight unions when pushing the hose on you need to lock it onto a threaded part or they push the union apart and the hose does not go on far enough. i basically mocked it all up first, made all the brackets etc and the length of hoses to suit then took it all apart again to fit the hoses. so far no leaks and only a couple of bits to finish off
no worries mate, thanks for looking for them. got it sorted in the end. everything just seam to take me ages to get done, be easier if we didn't have to work for a living.......... i'd get a lot more done then.
