I am officially pi$$ed off. Story so far Professionally rebuild engine Installed in the van and started up. Sounded like it didn't have an exhaust on. Shut down and discussed the problem with @zed Who thought the heat exchanger on no 1 & 2 wasn't sealing onto the head. We had a play repositioning the copper washers and re tightened the heat exchanger. Started up Sounded like it didn't have an exhaust on Shut down Zed went home and I flounced off indoors in a strop. Ordered new copper washers Waited a week until they turned up Fitted them Started up Sounded like etc etc Shut down Just refitted heat ex with TWO copper washers on each cylinder. Started up Sounded like etc etc Threw every teddy I could find out into the road Put a post on The Late Bay. Having a cup of tea while I await any ideas from you lot. ...........
These silk teddies of the dodgy top shelf magazine sort? If so, can I have mine back please as there isnt half a draught here...
Take the heat exchanger off, put a straight edge across the flanges to see if they are straight and parallel to each other.
Yes you can have your teddy back if you let me take it off you again, we really enjoyed it last time didn't we?
No, new exhaust but the heat exchanges exhaust flanges are very poor. I didn't feel any leaks from the heat ex to exhaust joints
Bob. can you take it for a run, I mean do you feel it will be ok to drive? Some times a good run up to temperature will sort out minor noises etc, settle it in so to speak!
Yup, but check them all, a good quality file and ten mins careful filing can get the flanges straight and true, I have done this a lot on older cars, sometimes had them milled by engineers
Is it a 2 litre with hydraulic tappets? If so they take sometime to pump up and rattle like hell, until the oil gets in. Talking from my T3 CU engine experiance here
This is the flange with a straight edge across the other one. If the straight edge goes onto this one the other one is very slightly out of true. Even with double copper gaskets fitted there were no witness marks on the gaskets when they came out.
can you get a smoke pellet in their then try it , i would have thought you would be able to feel sumat if its blowing but a smoke pellet will show if it is
The HX was fine on the engine and not blowing before it was rebuilt. This side had a new head. As Bob says, I didn't get time to look into it. The cam needs running in so it's more or less start it "bang, bang" switch it off. Hate to say it, but maybe the HX is fine and the head isn't sealing?
