Yes, very tatty on the outside and the flanges onto the silencer are well dodgy but they're not holed inside and the pipes into the head seem pretty good. It's fitted at the moment so I'll get Jan to rev it up while I'm underneath and see if I can pinpoint it a bit better. I've been trying not to run it for long while I'm trying to sort this because I want to give it 20 mins around 2000rpm to harden the camshaft. I don't want to do that until I'm sure the timing is correct.

You could sick a bit of plasticene in place of the copper gasket fit HX and remove and measure the squish on plasticene . Saves running motor
A bit of tissue paper or a single ply of bog roll. Hold it up to suspected leak and see if it wafts about. Or a can of disco smoke.
Use a thick strand of solder. It'll squash easy and hold its shape better than plastercine. Just don't get it inside the engine!
