Noisy engine and teddies all over the garage

  1. I've not got any pictures either... I ported some heads a while back, but I never photo'd them :(

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

My gut feeling is your builder will not have missed this. He's done it all a zillion times before...

  3. It would be an odd thing to miss!!

I thought you were on about minor rattles etc. Not the noise it reads like now, Sorry.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I'll give him a call in the morning and ask if he did a compression test. It looks like I'll need to buy two new heat ex to see if that sorts it.
It's not like I don't need new ones anyway.

Yes although if he has, it's a nice easy cheap fix.

Ha ha it's like a bloody tank at full throttle at the moment.
I've had the noise abatement officer round four times already, if I can't make it quieter the council are going to confiscate it.

  8. Are you a techy guy? Can you record videos on your phone? Sure we'd all like to hear it, and make disparaging comments, just to add to your misery;)

I'm not allowed video equipment after the unfortunate misunderstanding in the ladies showers at our local swimming pool.

However, all is not lost, I have a handy tip for everyone who wants to hear my engine noise.
Simply remove your own exhaust system start your engine and quickly rev it to full throttle.

    Happy to help.

  10. When I was a nipper, me and a few mates bought an old Honda CJ 350, that we used to rag around the farm lanes....it had no exhaust or foot pegs, so you had to put your feet on the engine casing....the blue flames from the exhaust port were truly awe inspiring, especially at night...
"Why the misty-eyed vignette?" I hear you ponder...
Well...the note from the engine, aside from, the deafening nature of it, was very distinctive....it had what I can only describe as a "gobbling" quality to it...Turkey as opposed to those special films Daddy watches on his own:oops:

Does yours have a "gobbling" quality to it? If so, you've a big hole somewhere (fnnarr, fnnarr)...or else you've fitted a Honda CJ sans exhaust...most likely the former.
That's why I suggested you could see it at night, if it's leaking that badly....blue flames

  11. I doubt it'll be that simple dude!!

What I have noticed with oval port HX, is that you need to clamp them down in even stages, as they have a habit of twisting, and not sitting on the copper gaskets properly!!

I've even had to tweak the pipes with a screwdriver as they go in, just to get them to sit over a little!!

Worth trying the old ones again then. It's quite a harsh sharp sound.
Does anybody anneal the copper washers before they fit them?
Also when an old set come off can you see marks in the copper where they were tightened up? I've got 6 copper washers here now and they've all been fitted at some time during this week but they all still look brand new and unmarked.

  13. If the flange on the HX isn't pressing in to the copper. You may need to file off some metal on the tabs that the bolts pass through, bringing the flange tight onto the copper.

  14. Today is flange day...:food:

  15. Sounds like the HX are not tightening up ? Are they new heads ? You should see squish marks in the copper gaskets unless they are fouling on something and stopping them

^this. If you flatten off the HeatX mating faces don't forget to take a corresponding amount from the underside of each bolt hole/lobe. On my new heatX I had to shape around my bolt holes as well, they fouled on the head. I also reused the copper rings after annealing them. There were no witness marks on them after the first trial fitting.

That looks like tomorrow's job then. Just refitted them using @Paul Weeding 's idea of jiggling them to get a better seating. Didn't work. :(

I wonder if the studs are too long and therefore not sealing/seating HX correctly?

Unlikely, but I would have thought there would have been some marks.

When HX on and tight can you feel it blowing from anywhere underneath?

If this is the oval type HX shouldn't the bit shown have the connection thingy where it bolts to the engine/head.... I don't see it.

A bit like this pic.... I think this is before I got it fixed so the HX was hanging down a bit.
