I had a call from Sandybay earlier and he played me a banging noise down the phone. What can I say - it was a bad banging noise. It happened suddenly at 60mph. That's all I know. He's looked in the rocker covers and nothing obvious. So while he takes it apart and looks for broken bits please guess what's wrong and point out some stuff to look for. It's a T4 2.0L a/c engine with twin solex carbs. My guess - turn it over and check all the valve gaps - maybe one will be huge and the valve seat has come out and jammed the valve.
Doesn't "banging" mean "good" in street talk? "My valve seats are, like, banging, blood". Nothing to worry about, I'd think.
Hmmm! I think I'll hold off on the Scottish tour for a while. I've taken the plugs and fanbelt off to see if I've got an enormous gap on one of the rockers and the engine wedges solid after about 180 deg of rotation. It won't actually rotate to tdc for No 1. I'll get my garage tidied up first and then it looks like I get a bit more practice at engine removal.
If you're dropping the engine do you have some decent gear because, I think it's been mentioned once or twice, they do actually weigh a bit! We live just South of Grantham and I have one of those motorcycle lift jobbies (1500kg) that make the job a whole lot easier and you're welcome to borrow it but you'll need to be quick to pick it up as were off on hols Friday lunch time thinking about it I'm actually near P'bro tomorrow so could drop it off dependant upon where you are and if there'd be someone to receive it Let me know either way Mr B
i remember playing zed a banging noise down the phone when my van had sat 3 months with no oil in, he said it would either stop banging or it wouldn't but if it didn't i'd have to take it to bits anyway....... it ran like a bag of knackers for about half hour and then quietened down when the hydraulic tappets decided to work. i like your hijack of the techenders thread btw.
That's a lovely offer Mr B. I live in Ramsey which is about 10 miles south of P'boro. If the lift will fit in an ordinary car I could meet you somewhere in P'boro possibly? It sound like a useful bit of kit as I'll be taking it out on my tod.
