  1. Fixed sliding door lock so it locks again now...

It turns out all that was needed was a lot of oil and a clean. As a bonus door now shuts better to as back latch catches first time rather than multiple slams.

    I love a free fix.

I acknowledged my limitations and having fixed all the electrics (and they were very challenged) had to seek pro help to get the engine running. I had the bus taken on a flatbed (still not uk registered) to my local guru.
He had the engine and gearbox out before I could finish making us a brew to discuss the plan of attack.
He put the engine on his rig and checked the compressions. Initially they were good on 2 and low on 2. He then got the lump running. Bit smokey at first but it runs ! Unfortunately It promptly spat a plug. I think it's still got some life in it so I'm going to put an insert in there.
Gearbox is a CM code which is consistent with year of build.
    However I think it's for a type 4 engine.
I need a shorter input shaft so I can marry it to the 1600 type 1 engine - certainly explains why the engine mounting bolts were all loose. I could only get it to turn over slowly and it looks like the flywheel teeth have been catching the inside of the bell housing.
So in summary a good day. Just got to hunt out some more parts.
Gearbox shaft and some decent tinware being the priority now.
Getting closer to its first UK MoT.
Oh and I was sent a NOVA certificate in the post : - )

  3. Passed MOT!

Cheers all... bad earth on tail ...small nick in wires to sidelight catching on body sometimes!

  4. Just joined the solar panel club!

2 100W rigid panels. One in the roof rack and the other one on an extension lead to be placed in the sun if the van is parked in the shade. :)
The setup is still on its version 0 and will need to be improved (probably at techender) but it's working for our holidays in France!

  5. Changed the front wheel bearings both sides

Went for the weekly spin and all working well. Cruised around the west coast in third breaking the 35 mph speed limit at a steady 40 mph. Bodes well for 65 on a motorway.
Took the roof tent out for an airing and Fabsil after a three year hibernation.

    Yeah, he's a good lad.

I'm going at it as hard as time and funds will allow.

Won't feel truly part of the Late Bay posse until I can drive it.

After the dizzy electric-shock-up-me-arm incident of a few weeks ago, I took TLB advice and under the cover of darkness opened the noisy cupboard hatch with the engine running...... it was like a flippin' firework display in there!!! Yikes.
Daylight revealed plastic fatigue in the clips holding the HT leads to the fan housing, said leads touching the inlet manifold, and some large areas of molten silicone.
So a swift purchase of some FORST 'top quality' leads, plus all new clip holder thingies, and all is good again with a nice healthy spark heading to each plug. Van drives lovely. Happy days.

Also wired in a rear fog light, added a switch in the glove box to run the radio direct off the leisure battery when I'm parked up, and a little bit of tweaking of the dash lights so that all three pods are equal and the Smiths retro clock can no longer be seen from space. (I confess I didn't do the last few bits of this, but I did do the HT leads )

I will bring a bucket, some washing powder and some Marigold gloves and a scrubbing board to Techenders so anybody who is worried by washing the curtains can have a go under the supervision of other more experienced owners.

Engine out. Going to clean it and put an insert into No 4 spark plug hole this morning.

Also going to give the gearbox a good clean before it goes back in.

I can feel myself getting very dirty today.

  19. Yes I had this done. I find the blades much easier to deal with, especially when your fingers are numb with cold. Can have a look at Techenders if anyone wants.
